We are wrapping up our 2D shape unit with some Magic of Math shape building fun.
🚧 Next week is also our open house so my students will also have this activity (with fresh materials 🤪) on their desks so they can build shapes with their families. I love having interactive activities so my students can demonstrate for their families what they have been learning. 😁

Welcome to the Second Grade Eras Tour! Today we began our Friendship Era. I made a bracelet for each of my students with a ❤️K and I gave each student the supplies to make 3 bracelets each with their initials on them. Once their bracelets were all made, they walked around the classroom and traded bracelets with 3 new friends. They had to make sure they learned each others names and asked them about one of their favorite things. While they were walking around, I also walked around and gave them one of my bracelets. So at the end of the day they all went home with bracelets from four new friends. They loved everything about it and they were so proud of their bracelets and all their new friends. It was a great first day of school. 🥰

As teachers we want our students to be successful so allowing them to have a productive struggle can be hard, but it is necessary for building a deeper understanding of new concepts.
So, what if we think of modeling as a scaffold?
Instead of automatically modeling everything for our students, let’s shift our thinking.
Before you model for your students ask yourself, do I need to show them what to do or do they already have what they need to work through it on their own?
Providing the opportunity for a productive struggle not only build a deeper understanding, it builds confidence as well.

Hello 2023! It has been a minute or two since I’ve been active on here. Or maybe even longer, I don’t really know. The last several years have all just meshed together. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that 2019 was 4 years ago! I know right?! Honestly, I feel like I just returned from Thanos’ snap (if you know, you know).
Anyways, during the snap, I did do a few things. I went to grad school and got my masters in reading and literacy and my reading specialist credential. I changed positions from 2nd to kinder, back to 2nd, and now as a literacy coach. As a parent, I survived 4 consecutive years of having a middle schooler (twins + 1, not the same child for 4 years 🤪), we moved, had some adventures and now I’m excited to get back to sharing content. 😁
This year I am looking forward to growing as a literacy coach and sharing as I go.
How are you excited to grow as an educator this year? Share your goals in the comments.

I forgot to add our picture to cover of Riley’s Adventure Day, so I’m posting it instead. I have to keep things fair. 😂🤪

This little reminder to take small steps when trying to implement changes is on our conference table. When we meet with new teachers we want to make sure they know it takes time to reach mastery. 💕
