📖 Touring private schools this fall? Read our guide before you go!

It outlines what to watch for on a school tour, what questions to ask, what to do after the tour, and more. And it’s not just advice for touring Courtyard, it's what we'd tell a friend before touring any school.

While many of us with kids spend a lot of time thinking about or preparing for kindergarten and middle school, elementary school often gets less attention. But those are often the years when our kids are really starting to decide who they are, academically and socially.

If you or anyone you know is curious about private elementary schools, we put together a guide outlining what to look for, including class size, how students are grouped together, before and after care, and more.

We also talk about what those years look like here at Courtyard: multi-age classrooms after 2nd grade, same teacher for two years, and a full 7am–6pm day with breakfast, lunch, and most field trips included.

Every August 12, communities around the world pause to recognize young people, not just as students preparing for the future, but as scholars, artists, and leaders already shaping the world around them today. 💫

That idea is right at the heart of what we do at Courtyard.

This International Youth Day, we're celebrating our Courtyard scholars and the ways they're already showing up as thoughtful, capable young people. Their curiosity today is exactly what will carry them toward strong high school programs, college, and into the world beyond.

Here's to the next generation of leaders. We're proud to be a part of their journey. 💙

If you or your friends are looking for a private school in Sacramento, we may be able to help!

Choosing a school can mean a lot of tabs open, half-finished comparisons, and second-guessing your decisions. We put together a parent's guide comparing four of the top private schools in Sacramento (Sacramento Country Day, Merryhill Midtown, Brookfield, and Courtyard), covering class sizes, schedules, tuition ranges, and what kind of student might be the best fit at each school.

Take a look at our guide (one of the four schools is ours, of course), and then tour a few schools yourself. That’s still the best way to know what’s right for you and your family.

Read more on our website, or call (916) 442-5395 to schedule a tour.

Happy Parents’ Day from Courtyard School!

Anyone who's spent time on our campus knows this isn't a school where families drop off in the morning and disappear until pickup. Parents here really show up, and that involvement is part of what makes Courtyard feel less like an institution and more like an extended family.

Courtyard wouldn't be Courtyard without you. Thank you.

💙 Courtyard isn’t just a school, it’s a community.

Our families, volunteers, and board members are as involved as our staff, and that partnership is part of what makes this place work. We’re grateful to each and every one of you.

At Courtyard, field trips aren't just a fun break from routine, they're built into how we teach. Kids bring different life experiences into the classroom, and the ones who've seen more of the world tend to read, think, and connect ideas more easily. So we take our scholars out into Sacramento and beyond, regularly and with real purpose.

Every trip is planned to tie directly into what students are learning, so before heading to see a play, for example, our students read the script first, so they're watching with context instead of just watching. Afterward, they might write about or share what the story meant to them, how it connects to their own experience, or a concept they learned along the way.

It's all part of our all-inclusive approach at Courtyard: small classes, strong academics, and the kind of real-world learning that helps kids become confident readers, thinkers, and leaders.

In a small middle school, there’s nowhere to disappear, which means a teacher actually sees what’s happening with each student. And that’s a gift during the exact years when a lot of kids stop volunteering information at home.

At Courtyard, our middle schoolers are known by name and by personality, and we have a program that includes Spanish, theater, music, science, even life skills like cooking and budgeting, so kids have the space to figure out what interests them. And when it’s time for the transition to high school, students are ready. Our alums attend the leading high schools in the area, such as Christian Brothers, Jesuit, St. Francis, McClatchy, JFK PACE, Rio Americano, and Mira Loma.

If you (or someone you know) is in the process of choosing a kindergarten in Sacramento, take a look at our recent blog!

We break down what you should be looking for on a tour and the real questions to ask when you’re there, including class size, play-vs-academics balance, teacher tenure, and the transition plan for new students.

We also cover the one thing a lot of school websites leave out: full-day, working-parent-friendly hours. At Courtyard, our day runs 7am–6pm with before- and after-care, meals, and enrichment built right in, not billed as extras.

Read the full article, and then give us a call and come see our full-day kindergarten classrooms in person!
