First Steps

The Start of Something Good. First Steps is a child development center, operated by Saint John's Program For Real Change.

PHILOSOPHY

First Steps is dedicated to providing children with a sense of wonder and a lifetime love of learning. We believe that each child is an individual that develops and learns at their own pace. These differences are recognized, respected, and celebrated. We believe it is also important to laugh and have fun! An environment where the child is allowed to investigate, absorb information and

grow is essential. Teachers will provide the child with a prepared environment that allows freedom of movement, personal choice, and independence. First Steps is divided into two growth areas:

Infants and toddlers are encouraged to develop motor skills and awareness of their environment in a loving, caring atmosphere that will foster in each child a strong feeling of security and well being. The infant’s caregiver is responsible for important elements of the child care, such as feeding, diapering, soothing and basic interaction. Communication skills are developed through group play and individual interaction. Our preschool program prepares the child to develop an appreciation for learning that is necessary for future school success. Fine and gross motor skills are refined, creativity is encouraged, and self-esteem is fostered. Kindergarten readiness is achieved through exposure to math, language, science and nature. All children are encouraged to “think” independently, encouraging decision-making abilities within their given environment.

Chef Dan from Plates Café and Catering taught us how to turn our garden greens and potatoes into a delicious soup. Our group listened intently and then sampled the soup. We learned a few new words today, Julienne cut, simmer, herbs and cannellini beans. Thank you Chef Dan for the lesson and Ms. Irina for growing amazing vegetables and herbs.

We picked fresh greens from the garden today and delivered them to Chef Dan at Plates Cafe for a special cooking project tomorrow!
