Aircraft maintenance is a continuous process, with inspections carried out at different stages to ensure the aircraft remains safe and airworthy.
Preflight Inspection
Required as part of the pilot’s responsibility for safe operation. Checks for visible damage, leaks, contamination, and other obvious issues before every flight.
50-Hour Inspection
AIAA is one of very few schools conducting 50 hour inspections, across our training fleet, as a proactive preventive step for e.g. to inspect the oil filter for metal debris, and catch minor mechanical wear before it turns into a dangerous in-flight failure. A 50-hour inspection is never directly required by the FAA.
100-Hour Inspection
Conducted every 100 flight hours in Tach time.
It can involve a variety of checks for e.g.- compression checks, oil system checks, spark plugs, brakes and tyres.
100-hour inspection is required for any small aircraft under 12,500 pounds that carries passengers for hire or is used for flight instruction for hire*. Can be performed by an A&P mechanic and is not limited to one with an IA.
Annual Inspection
Required every 12 calendar months, by most civil and general aviation aircraft registered in the United States.
It is a complete check of the whole plane. More scrutinous and in depth than a 100 hour. It must be performed by an A&P mechanic with Inspection Authorization, making it more restrictive than a 100-hour inspection.
FAA progressive inspection
A program that allows aircraft owners to split a standard annual or 100-hour inspection into smaller, scheduled phases. This method reduces long maintenance downtime and keeps planes flying more often.
