The Constitution of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) became effective in May 2006. The constitution established a governance structure that was similar to and based on the governance structure of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges

The original SSCCC constitution provided that the SSCCC shall have a General Assembly and a Student Senate Council. The G

General Assembly is in the books and the energy was unmatched!

The weekend brought us powerful candidate conversations, engaging workshops that sparked new ideas, and an incredible candidate meet & greet that brought everyone closer together. The momentum was felt from the very start.

We were inspired by the keynote from Dr. Farima Pour-Khorshid, grounding us in resilience and the power of our voices, and carried that energy into resolutions that centered what matters most for our students.

This year also marked a special milestone as attendees were officially welcomed as members of SSCCC in celebration of 20 years. From regional elections to final resolutions and executive board elections, every moment reflected leadership in action and a shared commitment to shaping the future.

Congratulations to our newly elected 2026–2027 Executive Board! We’re excited for the leadership ahead and all that’s to come!

On Day Three, students leaders took their advocacy directly to Capitol Hill.

Participants met with Members of Congress and congressionals staffers to elevate the voices and priorities of community college students nationwide. Through powerful conversations and personal storytelling, students ensured their lived experiences were represented in federal policy discussions.

It was a memorable day to say the least and we are all looking forward to the upcoming conversations tomorrow!

Day 2 of Federal Advocacy Academy was all about preparation, purpose, and policy in action.

We were honored to hear from Dr. Eric Mayes of the Umoja Community Education Foundation who spoke to the responsibility that advocacy grounds the student perspective in confidently owning your lived experience. Following suit, Chancellor Sonya Christian, whose leadership spoke to the impact of shared ownership, community power, and student voices.

In legislative priority workshops students learned to refine their messaging, align their shared goals, and vote to elevate the issues that matter most to community college students.

Students used some of the content and tools they learned from Advocacy and Story-telling workshops to powerfully advocate on strengthening their pursuit of higher education. The day concluded with a congressional visit briefing to ensure every advocate is prepared and ready to engage on Capitol Hill tomorrow!

Day 1 of Federal Advocacy Academy is officially in the books!

We started by challenging our mindset, strengthening community, and stepping fully into our power.

From conversations that pushed us to think beyond limits, to a (very competitive!) round of rock, paper, scissors, and making new connections through Networking Bingo, today proved that advocacy is built on both courage and community.

Growth happens when we challenge ourselves. Impact happens when we are united.

Can’t wait for tomorrow. See you there!

Today, we kicked off Day One of Federal Advocacy Academy. It was a day grounded in purpose, possibility, and student power.

Pictured are SSCCC President, Jerry Reyes and Executive Director, Dr. Julie Adams with our opening keynote, Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernández, whose journey and leadership continue to inspire the next generation of advocates and changemakers.

Thank you, Dr. Salomon-Fernández, for challenging our students to think bigger, lead boldly, and view advocacy as a pathway to possibility and opportunity. Your example reminds us that access to education transforms lives and student voices belong in every policy space.

The power to make a difference is already within us.

We want to hear your favorite part of Day One! Comment below and tag a friend you want to celebrate that is making an impact on the community college experience.

Black History Month is about more than reflection. It’s about progress.

In 2024, SB 1348 officially recognized Black-Serving Institutions across California Community Colleges. That means real visibility, real accountability, and real investment in Black student success.

This is what advocacy looks like in action.

Black History Month honors legacy AND builds what comes next. And SB 1348 is proof that progress is happening right now.

We’re proud to stand with Black student leaders across California who continue pushing this work forward.

As today’s lawsuit challenges long-standing protections like AB 540 and the California Dream Act, the Student Senate reaffirms our commitment to every student’s right to accessible, affordable higher education.

We will continue advocating, keep students informed, and stand firmly with our undocumented community every step of the way. You belong here.

It’s official! SB 707 has passed. This shows the strength of the California Community College student voices and ensures equitable representation across our system.
