MAH-TO-TOH-PA or FOUR BEARS
Chief of Mandans
Hand-colored litho; Del. McGahey, Lith;
Day & Haghe, lithographers to the Queen
George Catlin described Four bears, as an "extraordinary man, though second in office (he) is undoubtedly the first and most popular man in the nation. Free, generous, elegant and gentlemanly in his deportment---handsome, brave and valiant; wearing a rove on his back, with the history of his battles emblazoned on it; which would fill a book themselves." Catlin continued: " No tragedian ever trod the stage, nor gladiator ever entered the Roman Forum, with more grace and manly dignity than did Man-to-toh-pa enter the wingman, where I was in readiness to receive him."

"Barn Owl"

Audubon Wrote: "The pair which I have represented were given to me by my friend RICHARD HARLAN, M.D., of Philadelphia. They had been brought from the South, and were fine adult birds in excellent plumage. I have placed a ground squirrel under the feet of one of them, as being an animal on which the species is likely to feed. "

The Golden Age of Book Illustration from
John James Audubon to Thomas Moran
An Exhibition Drawn from the Collections of the California State Library
The Golden Age of Book Illustration celebrates that great era when authors,
scientists, artists, and publishers collaborated to produce some of the most
elegant and sumptuously illustrated books ever produced. The highlight
of the exhibition is a selection of original hand-colored prints from John
James Audubon’s monumental The Birds of America (1827-38) It certainly
ranks as the most famous and prized of all color plate books and nothing in
the annals of book illustration equals the majesty of its 435 hand-colored
elephant folio plates. While Audubon’s great ornithological work is the
highlight, this special exhibition includes a variety of striking examples
ranging from lifelike engravings, lithographs, and chromolithographs of
flowers, snakes, and exotic scenery to elaborate reproductions of Medieval
manuscripts printed in gold, silver, and bronze.
