Peach, Pear and or Apple Allspice Chutney

This recipe can be used with either fruit and itโ€™s flexible. If using peaches, ensure that they are firm to the touch as the texture will keep. Best served onto soft cheeses and pates. Be sure to use fresh spices as this will certainly bring out the many flavors this chutney has.

The road map to becoming a UCCE Master Food Preserver volunteer includes reading assignments, studying, class time, hands-on labs, and a presentation on a subject of special interest to the trainee. Today was Presentation Day for Sacramento County trainees! This eager group (seen here with some of our current MFPs who were the audience) is one step closer to joining the ranks of UCCE Master Food Preservers of Sacramento County.

Motherโ€™s Day Jams and Jellies 2026 is in the bag!

Saturday before Motherโ€™s Day is for jamming here in Sacramento. Specifically, Low Sugar Strawberry Jam for all registrants, and then a choice of Pepper Jelly or Triple Berry Jam. For some, it was a chance to make gifts, for some it was a chance to gather with family or friends. Some had never made jelly before and some were brand new to it. And everybody went home with jars of their own making!

Happy Motherโ€™s Day to all the mothers out thereโ€ฆ including the squishy, slippery, science-y kind. ๐Ÿ’

In the world of fermentation, a โ€œmotherโ€ is the starter culture that helps make things like vinegar and kombucha possible.
Not exactly the kind that reminds you to bring a sweaterโ€ฆ but still, like all mothers, doing important work.

So today weโ€™re giving a little love to the mothers behind the magic.
They may not bake cookies, but they do make fermentation happen.
