Amtrak contracts with Siemens to build $3.4 billion in train sets in Sacramento - Sacramento Business Journal

Siemens Mobility Inc.’s Sacramento train factory announced today it has landed the largest order in its history, a $3.4 billion contract from Amtrak for 73 multipowered train sets.

"In addition to being more efficient, the new trains are more environmentally friendly. The diesel/electric locomotives use a diesel motor to drive a generator that powers the train. The diesel motor’s exhaust is processed through a selective catalyst reaction that has 70% less oxides of nitrogen than current diesel motors. The new train sets will also use regenerative braking that harnesses power from the substantial amount of energy it takes to slow or stop the trains."
