BIG NEWS! The museum is thrilled to announce the West Coast debut of “Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art” opening July 28.

The exhibition champions younger-generation artists of African descent, in dialogue with established predecessors, who are exploring questions of race, sexuality, power and history, while also pushing the boundaries of artistic practice.

Kara Walker, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas, Tomashi Jackson, Sadie Barnette, Eric N. Mack, Troy Michie, Jennifer Packer, Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Tunji Adeniyi-Jones are among the artists featured in this traveling exhibition drawn from the renowned private collection of Bernard I. Lumpkin and Carmine D. Boccuzzi.

“I belong here,” a neon sculpture by Tavares Strachan, also on loan from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Collection, is on view in the Manetti Shrem Museum’s lobby through March 2023.

Mark your calendars for July 28, when the museum reopens with “Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art.”
