To begin playing the piano, start by learning the basics of the keyboard, including note identification (C, D, E, F, G, A, B), proper hand position with curved, relaxed fingers, and finger numbering (1-5 for thumb to pinky).

Next, learn to read music, understanding both the treble and bass clefs and basic rhythm notations like whole, half, and quarter notes. Use simple sheet music or beginner books to get started.

Once you have a grasp of the fundamentals, practice scales and exercises to build finger strength and coordination. Major and minor scales are essential, and exercises from methods like Hanon or Czerny can further improve your technique.

When you're ready, start with simple songs you enjoy, playing them slowly at first and gradually increasing your speed. As you progress, use both hands, practicing each hand separately before combining them.

Most importantly, practice regularly. Short, daily sessions are more effective than infrequent long ones, and always prioritize accuracy over speed. Optionally, you can also listen and play by ear to further develop your musical understanding and ear training.
