Despite being the fruit and nut basket of the country, one in ten residents of are struggling with food insecurity. For those with chronic diseases, that means every meal can become part of the fight to keep their condition from getting worse.
Since 2019, the has helped combat the diabetes crisis in Stockton by establishing the Abbott Fund Scholars program. These scholarships support students in SHS's Nursing, Clinical Nutrition, and Social Work programs, and encourage them to focus their improvement projects on diabetes prevention, management, and education.
Inspired by the impact of this work, Congressman Josh Harder has introduced legislation intended to help replicate this model in communities across the country with federal support. "People with chronic diseases like diabetes shouldn't be struggling with poor nutrition and worse health outcomes in a place that grows a quarter of the nation's food," he says. "My bill changes that by investing in community partnerships to ensure our neighbors aren't falling through the cracks and making good quality food a pillar of health care." π₯
