The sustain pedal (the pedal on the right when you have multiple) is important for connecting sounds together. However, if you don't press it properly, you might end up mixing sounds together, creating chaos. The natural impulse might lead you to press the pedal at the same time as the note, but in fact, you should do the exact opposite to avoid any silence between two notes.
