This is from our friends at the California Sierra Nevada Judging Center. One of the judges, Tom Merics, passed away last year and an annual award was created in his honor. Here is the short article regarding this new award and some pictures that go with it.
Remembering Tom Merics: The Tom Merics Annual Award
Many of us in the orchid community were lucky to call Tom Merics a friend. He was a wonderful grower, a dedicated American Orchid Society judge, and someone who was always happy to swap plants, stories, and a bit of friendly advice with fellow enthusiasts. When Tom passed away in January 2025, the California Sierra Nevada Judging Center wanted to find a meaningful way to honor his memory and everything he contributed to our orchid community.
That's how the Tom Merics Annual Award came to be. Presented each year by the CSNJC, this award celebrates orchids that earned AOS recognition within our region during the previous calendar year (January through December). To keep things fair, plants exhibited by AOS judges aren't eligible.
Each year, our CSNJC judges will review photos of all the eligible award-winning plants and select one standout to receive the honor. The winner is then presented with the award in person at their local orchid society meeting—a nice way to bring the celebration home.
We're delighted to announce that the very first Tom Merics Annual Award goes to a gorgeous Dendrobium hekouense 'Sweetwater Chicks', which earned an impressive 92-point CCE/AOS and an 82-point AM/AOS back in August 2025. Congratulations to exhibitor Cheryl Jones of the Sacramento Orchid Society, with thanks to Ramon de los Santos for the beautiful photography that helped showcase this plant.
We're excited to make this an annual tradition in Tom's honor, and we'd love to see even more of your plants in the running for next year's award! Remember, CSNJC's judging region covers Sacramento, Sonoma, Diablo View (Concord), Fresno, Napa, Modesto, and Salt Lake City—so bring your blooms to a judging near you.
