I remember sitting in my office on a Sunday -- completely miserable -- trying to figure out how to get a handle on my caseload.
I had about 70 cases all set for trial, and I was drowning, Dina.
But I was determined to figure out how to be on top of my cases and stop feeling like I was the weak link in my office.
To stop feeling like I was the one lawyer who couldn't figure her 💩 out.
My solution?
It was the solution a lot of lawyers believe is the solution until they learn what I'm sharing in this week's Be a Better Lawyer.
My solution was to "do more."
That meant:
😓 staying a bit later each day, to "chip away" at my files
😓 coming in a few hours on both Saturdays and Sundays to dig myself out of the pile of discovery I needed to send to defense counsel
😓 bringing something home each night so I could get something done in those "wasted" moments between eating dinner and collapsing on the couch watching TV
Any of this sound familiar to you?
I had fallen for the myth perpetuated by lawyers all over the world: that doing more is the solution to feeling behind.
More hustle.
More grind.
More grit.
More discipline.
Not only was this mindset draining my battery, it was preventing me from seeing the bigger picture.🫣
That's because we can't solve problems from the level we created them.
My whole life I'd pushed myself through brick walls to make progress instead of taking a step back to consider solutions that solved the root of the problem and made me happy.
No amount of discipline or hustle was going to stop my misery.
That's because I was working from the mindset that I wasn't doing enough -- and ultimately, that I wasn't enough.
That I simply wasn't good enough to get the job done.
That's why my message in this week's podcast is important.
If you're working from a do more mentality, it's time to reassess how you're doing things and get to the root of the issue.
