Congratulations to our September HoWLs Award Winners!

S**o Middle School is incredibly proud to recognize this month’s Student of the Month and Outstanding Citizen award recipients! These students truly represent what it means to be a Bobcat and are wonderful models of respect, responsibility, and citizenship within our school community.

A huge thank you to our team teachers for taking the time to nominate two deserving students from their teams. Your recognition of students’ hard work, character, and positive contributions helps us celebrate the many ways our students make SMS a great place to be.

We would also like to thank the S**o Middle School PTO for providing snacks, beverages, and an individual water bottle for each of our honorees.

And, most importantly, congratulations to all of our September winners! You are model students and citizens, and we could not be more proud of you!

We look forward to celebrating 16 new students next month!

As a middle schooler in the ’90s, there are a few things I remember vividly about dances.

Admission was $5. There was pizza, friends, and fun. Paula Abdul had some incredibly catchy melodies, and when “Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch came on, it was just a matter of time before a circle would form in the center of the gym and an epic dance off would inevitably ensue.

When Bryan Adams and Boyz II Men emanated from the DJ's speakers, a crowded gym full of middle schoolers stood around awkwardly, waiting to ask—or be asked—to dance.

And let us not forget “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses. It was 27 minutes long, and if you got the chance to dance with your crush during that song, it was the highlight of your night. So memorable that you'd mention it in a Facebook post 35 years later.

In 2026 some things have changed. Slow music and slow dances have disappeared - kind of like cursive and the Yellow Pages. But the important things still remain: friends, food, fun, and a chance to spend time together outside the school day.

That’s what S**o Middle School students had last night as we kicked off the 2026–2027 school year. And the price of admission is still $5 - because opportunities to make these kinds of memories should remain immune to inflation.

A special thank you to our S**o Middle School PTO, parent and teacher volunteers, and DJ Tatro for supplying the tunes.
