York County Senior College

York County Senior College Learning as it should be - Lifelong!

12/09/2025

Greetings to all York County Senior College Members and Supporters

As you all know, after 26 years YCSC is planning to go Inactive as of December 31, 2025. We’ve chosen ‘Inactive’ with an eye to the possibility that within the not-too-distant future, a team of younger, energetic seniors - eager to keep learning - might assume the YCSC reins.

To ease the post-December 31 blues of those wishing to stay connected to lifelong learning, the following is information on the availability of other senior colleges throughout Maine - the primary resource being the Maine Senior College Network which encompasses all of Maine’s 16 senior colleges, from York & Wells to Machias & Presque Isle, their locations and websites. To check out the Network, go to: https://www.maineseniorcollege.org

For our York County area, we suggest you contact South Coast Senior College, located in Wells. The South Coast SC Chairperson, Sandy Kaan would be pleased to have you join them. South Coast SC uses CourseStorm, the same registration/catalog platform as used by YCSC – so that process would be familiar to you. SCSC and YCSC have shared several classes over the years, as well as having shared some instructors, so you may find familiar faces as well.

Chairperson Sandy Kaan email address: [email protected]

We urge you all to register with one of the senior colleges - lifelong learning is so very important. The senior colleges offer programs and activities that provide intellectual stimulation and social interaction much like YCSC has offered.

It has been a work of love for learning for all of us on the York County Senior College team over these many years. May you continue to enjoy many years of successful “Lifelong Learning”.

On behalf of York County Senior College,
Jane Carlson, Chairperson

Happy Holidays to All!
YCSC is gearing up for our Gary Sullivan Lecture Series - 2025 Edition! That announcement will be sent out early next week.
In the meantime, the following are a couple of YCSC updates.

Location Change: Our UMA/S**o office is starting the new year off in a new location. Effective December 20, 2024, UMA/S**o is moving to: 209 Main Street, #104, S**o, ME 04072
All other contact info (email, phone, website) remain as before.

Course Fee Change: YCSC was notified recently by CourseStorm, our online registration platform, of a fee increase effective 1/1/2025. Sadly, we must break our YCSC 25-year record of NO fee increases. Thus, effective with registrations for our 2025 Lecture Series, and future Standard Courses, fees will be $30. However, our annual Membership fee will remain at $25.

This was a big decision for us at YCSC. We hope you understand.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF LIFELONG LEARNING!

05/06/2024

York County Senior College 2024 Update
for Members and Supporters
So – are you looking for ways to utilize those skills you’ve neglected some since you retired?? Are you great at brainstorming ideas, organizing a schedule, have some IT experience, conducting a Zoom session – maybe even a hybrid session, recruiting speakers, and most of all - enjoying lifelong learning? YCSC needs you - so why not address those neglected talents, make a limited commitment, and help us complete the slate mentioned below!
YCSC is well into planning our 2024 annual meeting and celebrating of our 25th anniversary!!

The purpose of the annual meeting is to update members on the status of YCSC, and to present a slate of officers for approval – that slate is yet to be prepared.

During our 2023 Annual Meeting, YCSC Council expressed concern for the future of this treasure we know as York County Senior College. We itemized needs for volunteers in various areas and were pleased to have several folks agree to assist - from phone duty to administrative support, to field trip planning, and more.

Our biggest ask was for volunteers to form a Task Force Committee to look at YCSC, how we operate and what we needed to go forward. We were blessed with positive responses from 14 caring supporters, and our Task Force stepped off in July 2023 and has met once a month since then.

Task Force analyzed our options and ultimately agreed that we continue as currently structured under UMA/S**o, updating our By-Laws to be more comprehensive – a task that became rather consuming, has been completed and approved by YCSC Council/UMA, and will serve to support future YCSC leaders. (By-Laws are available upon request.)

While this streamlining is important, people are the soul of an organization. YCSC’s needs new folks to step in and participate - new officers and the council members to support them.
