We had so much fun at the Rutland Free Library with our STEAM Time!

This is a monthly class that falls on the 2nd Thursday of each month, 11:30am–12:30pm

This month we were exploring potion making & chemical reactions using common food items:

(Picture 2, in order)
What happens when you mix cranberry juice and baking soda?
What about lemon juice and cranberry juice?
Water and flour?
Water and cornstarch?
Dish soap and vinegar?

Liquid vs. solid
Base vs. acid

And even just the little variations within each solution that make it special!

Chia seeds expand in water…
Cranberry juice darkens when mixed with baking soda…

When I asked them what they hypothesized would happen, after the first experiment, they just didn’t know anymore! 😂

What a fun opportunity for kids who LOVE to mix, explore, experiment & learn through hands-on exploration! 😍

Yesterday I was over at Northwest Tapestry Program and got to work with all of their scientists on a few chromatography projects!!! 🍃🧪

We explored some new vocabulary as we “extracted” the color from leaves using rubbing alcohol, warm water, and coffee filters… watching as some of those hidden pigments started to show themselves!

We also drew directly on paper with the leaves; which SHOCKED some of the kids when they realized the pigment rubbing off onto the paper was ANOTHER way we could “extract” the color from the leaves!!!

Same idea… completely different process!

I LOVE giving kids the chance to actually SEE these science concepts happening right in front of them. Touching it, testing it, asking questions, making predictions & discovering things for themselves!!!

Science is SO much more fun when you get to PLAY with it!

Minecraft Mania is coming up October 24th and it's ALWAYS a huge sensation!

Children who attend this 2 hour drop off class get an entirely Minecraft themed experience where they build biomes with Magnetic cubes, caves with our giant magnetic tiles, build with Minecraft themed Legos, and soooo much more!

If you've found yourself needing childcare for your school aged children, and know that theyd loveeeee this adopt-a-pet play-camp day, sign them up!

8am-4pm, $80 a day
Pack a change of clothes, lunch, water & snack

Once theyre here, they'll pick a special pet from our collection of adoptees, give it a check-up at our veterinarian clinic play-scape, make it a bed, collar, and more!
