Meet George Washington — the very first President of the United States.

Before he ever stepped into the White House, Washington helped lead the fight for American independence as commander of the Continental Army. Then in 1789, he became the nation’s first president and helped set the standard for everyone who followed.

From the Revolution to the presidency, George Washington played a huge role in shaping the new United States.

Lincoln took office in 1861 as America was heading into the Civil War. His presidency would become defined by preserving the Union, the Emancipation Proclamation, and one of the most famous speeches in American history—the Gettysburg Address.

In this U.S. History Adventure, Abe tells his own story and explains why his presidency is still remembered more than 160 years later.

Who keeps one part of the government from becoming too powerful?

That’s where the three branches of government come in.

Congress makes the laws.
The President carries them out.
The courts interpret them.

And thanks to checks and balances, each branch has ways to limit the power of the others.

Lil’ Al is breaking down U.S. history one piece at a time so it actually makes sense.
