🐾 Meet the newest member of The School House family… BRUCE! 🐾

We are so excited to introduce you to Bruce, our new therapy dog! 💛

And before we tell you all about him, we have to share something that makes his arrival even more special: Bruce was generously donated to The School House by Jennah Spencer, who is also the one who trained him! Jennah has invested her time and care into preparing Bruce for this kind of work, and then chose to give him to our school and our students. We are incredibly grateful for her generosity and for trusting us with this sweet boy. ❤️

Bruce is 3 years old and, as far as breed goes… your guess is as good as ours. 😂 His dad is unknown, and according to a DNA test, his mom was a mix of 10+ different breeds. So we’re going with his official breed: Super Mutt. 😬🐶

But what Bruce lacks in a clear family tree, he more than makes up for in sweetness.

One of the things we value deeply at The School House is caring for the whole child. Learning happens best when children feel safe, connected, confident, and supported—and Bruce is going to be another tool in helping us create that kind of environment.

As our therapy dog, Bruce will spend time with students and staff throughout the school day. His job will include:

🐾 Providing comfort, companionship, and a little extra encouragement
🐾 Helping reduce stress and anxiety
🐾 Supporting confidence and emotional-regulation skills
🐾 Giving students opportunities to practice reading and communication in a relaxed, judgment-free setting
🐾 Helping children develop empathy, compassion, and responsibility
🐾 And, of course, supplying the occasional tail wag when somebody just needs one. ❤️

You might find Bruce hanging out during class, joining us at recess, listening to a student read, or simply sitting quietly beside someone who needs a calm friend nearby.

We’ll also be teaching our students how to interact appropriately with Bruce, respect his boundaries, and understand when he is working or needs space—because learning how to care for and respect animals is part of the experience, too.

Today Bruce and Mrs. Gearhart did a little “professional development” of their own: a park bench, a good book, and some practice simply being together in a calm space. 📚🐕 And we think he’s going to fit into School House life just fine.

Just a reminder that our pancake breakfast was MOVED to NOVEMBER 1st and WILL NOT BE HAPPENING TOMORROW! We are looking forward to cozy pancakes with friends in the fall!
