**Teach and Inspire Worldwide: Online Master of Arts in TESOL**

Language opens doors. English proficiency can create life-changing opportunities for higher education, career advancement, community engagement, and personal success. That is why skilled TESOL professionals are needed in K-12 schools, colleges and universities, community organizations, and international language programs.

Arkansas Tech University’s fully online Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages prepares educators and language professionals to support English learners through research-based instruction, effective assessment, and culturally responsive teaching.

For Arkansas educators, the program includes the core coursework required by the Arkansas Department of Education for an ESL endorsement, allowing teachers to advance their license while earning a master’s degree.

**The program is designed for:**
• K-12 teachers seeking an ESL endorsement or salary advancement
• Multilingual educators serving diverse student populations
• International educators interested in teaching English abroad
• Postsecondary instructors preparing to teach ESL
• Future scholars considering doctoral study in linguistics or education

**Students develop advanced expertise in:**
• Second language acquisition
• ESL assessment and evaluation
• Teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking
• Linguistics and language development
• Cross-cultural communication
• Evidence-based classroom practices

As schools and communities become more linguistically diverse, knowledgeable and culturally responsive educators are more important than ever.

Alumni Spotlight🌟

Meet Dr. Shawn Hettinga, a proud School Counseling & Leadership alumna who now serves as Superintendent of the Hector School District! We’re proud to celebrate her leadership and the impact she’s making in Arkansas Education!

Read below about her experience in the program, and why School Counseling & Leadership may be right for you:

“What I enjoyed most about the School Counseling and Leadership program was that it challenged me to grow both professionally and personally. The program wasn’t just about learning theories or completing assignments; it was about understanding people. Through meaningful discussions, real-world experiences, and supportive faculty, I learned the importance of empathy, active listening, and building relationships. Those lessons have stayed with me long after graduation and continue to influence how I lead every day.

The program laid the foundation for the leader I am today. Beginning in school counseling taught me that every person has a story, and effective leadership starts with listening and understanding before making decisions. As I transitioned into administration and ultimately became a superintendent, I found myself relying on those same counseling skills just as much as my leadership training.

The program helped me develop the capacity to lead through difficult situations, build trust with staff and communities, and make decisions that are centered on what is best for students. It taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers but rather about serving others, developing people, and creating a culture where everyone can succeed. Those lessons have shaped every role I’ve held and continue to guide me as I lead a school district.”
