Hogchoker flounder a.k.a Freshwater Flounder. ( Trinectus Maculatus ).
There are dozens of articles out there on on how to care for this fish, many of which I believe are stearing aquarists away from purchasing this interesting oddball. So I would like to squash some of these common misconceptions that portray this fish as "hard to care for." Though I can not speak for flounders collected by other people in different locations. I will, however share my experiences in collecting and keeping these interesting animals. Many articles claim that they are incapable of thriving and growing in a completely freshwater system. This claim is false, I have been legally collecting these from the wild here in Florida and selling them wholesale for years. Most all of the spots that I collect them from are freshwater and the sizes always seem to be random. Hogchokers are said to be partially catadromous- as they spawn and hatch in brackish water and migrate back to freshwater to live and grow. This is why they are compatable for your freshwater aquarium because they prefer to live in a freshwater environment, even in the wild! In fact I have two medium sized Hogchokers in my own personal 55 gallon freshwater aquarium that have been living there with no issues for over 2 years! Another common issue articles claim about them is that they require live foods. Who has time for that right? This is also false. In the wild they feed mostly on small insects and crustaceans. However just like most fish taken from the wild they must be conditioned for a man made diet. Hogchokers actually can accomplish this much faster than many other species. The two Hogchokers in my aquarium eat only the flake food that falls to the bottom and the occasional frozen blood worms, and like I said before they are perfectly healthy. You will not regret purchasing this little fish! They do however require small grain substrate or sand as it resembles their natural habitat. They are very interesting and will usually be found stuck to the side of the aquarium like a suction cup or barried with only their eyes showing in the sand waiting for their next meal.
