Western Greenbrier County Rotary Club Western Greenbrier County Rotary Club is a service club that does service projects in our community, A. Warren, President. Please come join us.

Formerly Rupert Rotary, the Western Greenbrier Rotary Club seeks to involve all of Western Greenbrier County in service above self. We serve our community and our world through service projects, fund raisers, and our donations through Rotary International. We provide two scholarships to two area High School students each year, we work with other area partners and help provide snack packs for area

students, we helped eliminate the Guinea worm in one nation by drilling water wells to provide clean water to the communities there. and together with our partners Rotary is very close to ending Polio in the world. Along with our Rotary District and Rotary International, we can contribute to much more good service projects than we could as a small club alone. Our club has been a chartered Rotary Club since June 10, 1946 during the term of T. We welcome all who are interested in serving their fellow man, learning more about Rotary, enjoying good fellowship with each other, or enjoying a good meal from the Carriage Café. We meet the first, second, fourth, and fifth Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm. Right now we are meeting at the Community on Aging. Stay tuned to this page for other meeting places in the future. Soon we hope to be meeting at the old library in Rupert, but are flexible and may rotate meeting sites in other parts of Western Greenbrier County.

Western Greenbrier Rotary Club has worked hard to help with flood relief. Dave Lumsden brought a bunch of needed supplies and I worked very long hours at RMC not knowing if my home and pets were gone or not. Those of us who could not get to our homes slept on exam tables or the floor. I went to work at 8am Thursday and did not get home until SUnday night. My house and pets were fine. The electric had only been off for a short time. Everything was fine. District 7550 gave of their resources to help us, but Dave will have to update us on their part. We may be a small club, but we do have a big heart for serving.

WE ROTARY brought everything we requested, District7550 may have been part of that. Dave Lumsden was great. He worked all day to gather and deliver supplies.

This weekend, at the 7550 District Conference in Glade Springs, I heard a young Rotarian say: Find your passion and make it your purpose. That is what I want for our club. I want each member to tell me what their passion is, and as your President-Elect I want us to find a way to help us make their passions into their purposes in the 2016-2017 Rotary year.

Dave Lumsden and I attended the District 7550 District Conference this weekend. As usual, it was very informing and inspirational. We talked on the drives to and from each day about how we can apply the things we learn to Western Greenbrier Rotary and grow a bigger and more viable club here in Western Greenbrier County. This year is our 70th year anniversary. Our charter was issued in 1946. It seems impossible to me that there could ever be a day when there is no Rotary Club in the western side of the county while there is such a large one in the eastern side.

As you know most of my life was spent in Texas. Dallas and Fort Worth are neighbors, but Dallas is called the white collar city and Odessa the blue collar city. Midland and Odessa, Texas have a similar relationship. I can't help but think of Lewisburg and Rupert/Rainelle/Quinwood area or Eastern Greenbrier and Western Greenbrier the same way. Even the directions are all three the same. Things Eastern are white collar while things Western are blue collar. I have never been on the while collar side. I truly love the western side of everything. The side of the real workers.

Rotary has a long and interesting history. We have spear-headed the works to eradicate polio, and we only have 3 small countries left. If we do not completely wipe it off the face of the earth, it will come back mutated and with a vengeance. We are joined in these efforts by the WHO, and Bill Gates whose father was a Rotarian. Try Rotary.org and learn more about this wonderful organization. Our clubs all over the world work to improve our communities, our district, and the world. The Western Greenbrier Rotary Club meets weekly. We meet one week in Rainelle and at our clubhouse in Rupert. Rupert meetings are at 6pm, our Rainelle meeting begins at 5:30pm. We meet every Tuesday evening. On the 3rd Tuesday we have our BOD meeting at the clubhouse. Sorry I've been so absent on here lately. We had a great meeting last week. Bea and the Crookshanks were back in our midst. Bea looks great (as usual) you would never believe she had been down. We really missed the whole family while Bea was recovering, and want them to know we kept them in our prayers.

We had a great time at our fundraiser over at the Fairlea Presbyterian Church in Fairlea Saturday. Donna Farlow coordinated the whole event and the church allowed us to raise money for our club by selling American and German hotdogs at their beautiful event. We had fun, raised some money for our programs, and helped them have another shop in the market. Once we have tallied everything we will make a donation to the church for letting us be part of their event.

Everyone give Donna a big hug for all of her hard work, and give Aleta McCaffrey one for coming and giving us moral support. We are so glad you were able to come. Your beans were a big hit.

Tuesday 9/16/14 our meeting is cancelled.
Aleta is in ICU at Greenbrier Valley and John cannot make it Tuesday. Dave is in Quantico. The business meeting and the Paul Harris Inductions are postponed. I will keep you up to date when there is more news.
