Children Who Keep a Beat Learn to Read Better—Science Shows How

Research shows that rhythm skills in early childhood are closely tied to language and reading development. Preschoolers who can accurately clap or tap to a beat score up to 30% higher on phonological awareness and pre-reading assessments compared to peers with weaker rhythm skills (Gordon et al., 2020).

Brain studies reveal why: children with stronger rhythm abilities have sharper neural entrainment to speech sounds, meaning their brains respond more precisely to syllables and phonemes—critical for decoding words. This neural precision predicts better reading fluency and comprehension in elementary school.

In 2024, a study tested a six-week rhythm-training program in elementary children. What is Suzuki method? Why do I use it in my teaching? 🔍

Violinist Shinichi Suzuki began a method of music education in the early 1900s. The thought struck him that children learn their native language with ease. His discovery led him to teach music using the mother tongue approach. He taught children to play music in the same ways that they learn to talk.

With his approach, ALL children can learn music and play it beautifully. It is sometimes thought that a child is born with or without musical talent. Suzuki argues that this is not the case. The child is a product of his or her environment. “It is a superior environment that has the greatest effect in creating superior abilities.” -Suzuki

Some of the aspects that make up Talent Education include:

🎶 frequent listening to quality recordings
🎻 daily practice
🧑‍🧑‍🧒parent involvement
👂 listen to, imitate, and play music first. Read it later.
♥️ emphasis on character building and teaching the whole person.
👶🏼early start. It is usually recommended to start lessons before age 6. Although anyone can learn!
👦🏾👧🏼individual and group instruction
🎼common, sequenced repertoire

I have chosen to teach using Suzuki Method because I love children and I want to see them succeed. I believe that ANY child can enjoy and play music. I truly want them to experience the joy and confidence that comes from musical ability! 💫 😊
