A few summers ago, I got yelled at by my daughter, Lucy.
She was probably 12.

She was playing on a new soccer team, and I was trying to be a good sideline dad.

“Stay goal-side,” I yelled.

Lucy looked at me from the field and said —
“SHUT UP, DAD.”

Oh.

What did I do wrong?

Her new coach was teaching an offside trap, which meant not staying goal-side.

“I have a coach, Dad.”

Oh.

I thought I was helping.
Turns out, I was not.

And honestly? Staying quiet was hard.

Why?

Because I wanted to be in control — to make sure Lucy was doing everything right.

Not just for her, but for me.

It took me a while to realize:
It wasn’t about me at all.

It’s hard to let go of the wheel as parents.

But when we understand why we do what we do — and how to step back — we get better at it.

That’s a big reason I do this work.

Not just for athletes, but for parents, too.

Perfection isn’t possible.

But continued growth is.

On Wednesday, Nov 12 at 7 PM ET, I’m co-hosting a free live workshop called

The Champion Parent: Stress Less, Raise Confident Athletes.
If you’ve ever left a game thinking, “There has to be a better way,” this is for you.

Halloween is a pretty special day for me. My oldest child - my son - was born at 11:05 pm on October 31, 2008. He just called me to say he passed his driving test. Surreal.

Sadly, Halloween isn't the same as when we walked door-to-door hunting for candy. However, it's just as meaningful.

Whether you have kids or not, or
Whether they are big or small,
It's still a great holiday.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Most of an athlete’s performance is beyond their control — but how they respond in key moments can make all the difference.

In this clip from The Freshman Foundation® Podcast, sport psychologist Callum Gowling explains his simple “Three B’s” model:

🏃♂️ Body Language — How you stand, move, and carry yourself under pressure
🌬️ Breath — The fastest way to reset your focus in chaos
🧠 Brain — The next five seconds: what’s your plan, and how do you execute it?

When athletes learn to manage their body, breath, and brain, they don’t eliminate nerves — they handle them with composure and clarity.

I stood next to my client’s father at his son’s fall league basketball game last month.

(We’ll call my client “Dr. J.”)

As we quietly watched the game move up and down the court, his dad said matter-of-factly:

“He’s like a different kid.”

Find out HOW that transformation took place 👇

How can young athletes BOUnCE BACK from mistakes?

I recently had the privilege of answering this question as part of Youth Inc.'s “ASK THE EXPERTS” series.

The answer to the question isn’t simply about having “mental toughness” — it’s about having a plan.

Mistakes are part of every athlete’s journey.

What separates good players from great ones is how they respond in the moment.

When emotions take over, your brain goes into protection mode.
That’s why RESILIENCE isn’t automatic — it’s a SKILL you has to be TRAINED.

In this 3-minute video, I break down my simple 3-step Reset ROUTINE that helps athletes recover faster and refocus after mistakes:
✅ Recognize
✅ Reboot
✅ Refocus

It only takes a few seconds to RESET — but those seconds can CHANGE everything.

I'm 50 years old, so I am cautious about my reliance on technology. I've learned to embrace it because I run my business (and my life) one-man show.

I've been using AI to help with certain tasks, like editing and creating images. However, I am intent upon never relying on AI to be my "voice."

I believe AI will never substitute for human understanding and connection.

Chat GPT agrees. I got the following reply when I asked the question, "How does AI learn?"

"Humans learn by forming experiences, emotions, and conceptual understanding that transfer to new contexts. AI models only detect and reproduce statistical relationships between data. It’s like predicting the next word in a very sophisticated way — not forming beliefs or internalizing knowledge."

There is one thing AI will surely never be able to do as well as humans: understand other humans.

Sunday, October 12, 2025.

I had that uneasy feeling.

The same one we all get after making a mistake or a bad choice.

How did I make it go away by using the same skills I teach to young athletes?
