Getting stronger matters. But athletes don’t compete at one speed.

Strength provides an important foundation for athletic performance—but developing force is only part of the equation.

Sprinting, jumping and changing direction require athletes to express force under much shorter time constraints.

That’s why athletic development should include both strength development and appropriately programmed high-velocity movements.

Build strength. Express it fast.

“They already practice multiple days a week. Why do they need performance training too?”

Because sport practice and performance training have different primary roles in athlete development.

Practice develops the technical and tactical skills of the sport. Performance training provides dedicated opportunities to develop physical qualities like strength, speed, power and coordination.

But the two shouldn’t exist independently.

The demands of the sport should inform exercise selection and programming—and practices, games, tournaments and skill work all contribute to the athlete’s total training demand.

The goal isn’t to make training look like the sport. It’s to prepare the athlete for the demands of it.

Different jobs. Same objective. Build the athlete.

If an athlete wants to get faster, they need to sprint.

No drill or exercise replaces actually sprinting. But simply doing more “speed work” without understanding the athlete doesn’t tell us the whole story either.

Strength, power, coordination, movement strategy, training history and readiness can all influence how speed is expressed.

That’s why evaluation is part of the development process at Roberts Performance.

Movement assessment, coaching observation and objective testing—including force plate data—give us more information about the athlete in front of us. No single test or metric provides every answer, but together they help us make better programming decisions.

The same applies to coaching. Athletes don’t need a running checklist of cues in their head every time they sprint. Sometimes the better coaching decision is creating the right task, giving them an opportunity to solve it and letting them move.

Sprint. Develop. Reassess. Adjust.

That’s what structured speed development looks like.

Athletic development isn’t one exercise, one drill or one physical quality.

It’s the integration of movement competency, coordination, strength, speed, power and the ability to produce, absorb and redirect force.

Exercise selection, training volume, intensity and progression should reflect the athlete’s training age, individual needs and readiness.

Objective data gives us another layer of information to assess performance, monitor adaptations and make better programming decisions.

The exercises may change.

The purpose behind them shouldn’t.

More training doesn’t automatically produce better development.

With young athletes, training volume has to be managed—not simply accumulated.

Strength, speed and power development all require an appropriate training stimulus. But the stimulus is only one part of the equation. Exercise selection, intensity, volume, progression, training age, competition demands and recovery all influence the adaptations we’re trying to create.

That’s why effective programming starts with understanding the athlete in front of you.

Assessment and objective data help us identify what an athlete needs, establish appropriate progressions and make informed decisions as they develop.

The goal isn’t to accumulate the most reps, exercises or training sessions.

The goal is to create the right adaptations over time.

More isn’t always better. Better is better.
