Jesus never tiptoed around the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

He called them whitewashed tombs. A brood of vipers. People who looked righteous on the outside while hiding corruption within.

Those are strong words but before we use them to point at someone else, we have to be willing to let them confront us too.

The truth is, we all play the hypocrite sometimes.

There are days when I come face-to-face with my own hypocrisy. I see the places where I’ve been judgmental, unkind, ungracious, or unwilling to extend the same mercy I desperately need for myself.

Some days, grace finds me willing to bend toward Jesus. I reflect His character a little better. I listen. I repent. I choose kindness and mercy and I am a little less hypocritical.

Other days, I fail miserably.

Every person within the larger Church community will fail at some level, to some degree, at some point. That doesn’t excuse our hypocrisy. It gives us an opportunity to recognize it, repent of it, reconcile where possible, and become part of the solution.

We get to roll up our sleeves and do the dirty work of cleaning up the messes we’ve made.

And with Jesus, we get to begin again.

And again.

And again.
