It’s important to acknowledge the good jobs your child does. And it is worth remembering to emphasise the efforts they make too – “you’re trying really hard, well done” – as this makes for good motivation, even when the outcome isn’t perfect.
However, over-praising your child for mundane or run of the mill tasks could actually backfire. If your child expects praise for each and every thing they do, they will be demotivated and less inclined to try. So, be specific with your encouragement and praise, point out the positives, and focus on their achievement.
In addition to praise, we need to encourage our children with messages of support. We need to reassure, react and respond to our child’s behaviour in a way that lets them know it’s okay to fail. Delivering the message that “you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing” or “it’s okay to make mistakes” are just as important as praise.
