The BU EL-OTD students attended the annual AOTA conference. Students had the opportunity to attend short courses, technology sessions, poster presentations, and meet and learn from occupational therapy practitioners from across the country. BU OT students wore customize designed tee-shirts to show their support for Dr. Ellen Cohn who presented the 2019 Slagle Lecture, titled, “Asserting our competence and affirming the value of occupation with confidence”.

In the OT Process class, the EL-OTD I students formed therapist-client pairs to learn the process of evaluating, planning, implementing, and documenting occupational therapy assessments and intervention. Students developed intervention plans guided by behavior change theories.

The EL-OTD 2 students celebrated Occupational Therapy Month at the Massachusetts State House by educating visitors about occupational therapy. Students created and presented posters about the role of occupational therapy in addressing occupational performance impacted by sleep, pain, ergonomics, low vision, and caregiver support.

In the Assistive Technology class, the EL-OTD I students adapted battery-operated toys for children with disabilities. Students worked in teams to add jacks to the toys and build 3D-printed switches for each toy. The toys and switches the students adapted were donated to clinic sites, educational programs, and children with disabilities.

Clinical Professor Ellen Cohn recently delivered the prestigious Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture at the 2019 American Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference. Cohn’s lecture, "Asserting our competence and affirming the value of occupation with confidence" challenged the profession to affirm the value of occupational therapy and to substantiate what OTs do. To highlight the factors that enable OTs to effectively demonstrate the value of occupational therapy, Cohn addressed theories about competence and confidence and shared the narrative of a recent BU alumna, who developed a role for OT in a primary-care health center for people experiencing homelessness.

In the Assistive Technology class, the EL-OTD I students went on a field trip to the Assistive Technology Regional Center to trial various AT devices for living, learning, working, and playing. Devices included portable video magnifiers for people with low vision, utensils for people with tremors or limited upper extremity mobility, and an application that uses head movements to control mobile devices.

EL-OTD I students Laura and Emma are working with Associate Professor Gael Orsmond in the Family and Autism Research Lab on The ROAD Ahead Study. The purpose of the study is to identify how parents and educators help high school students with autism spectrum disorder that are graduating with a regular diploma develop self-management strategies needed for life after school. The researchers will also examine how those strategies contribute to positive transition outcomes after graduation from high school. Laura and Emma are currently working on recruitment, data processing and data entry for the study.

In Integrative Seminar, EL-OTD I students took Implicit Association Tests developed by Project Implicit to unmask biases related to race, disability, age, sexuality, and mental health. After receiving their results, students discussed their biases, how these biases may influence interactions with others, and what they can do to manage these biases as future occupational therapy practitioners.

Clinical Assistant Professor Jen Kaldenberg recently published a research paper in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy. The study identified the perceived barriers and facilitators to accessing low vision rehabilitation services for older adults with visual impairments in the state of Massachusetts. Findings showed that while visual impairments are progressive and chronic conditions, individuals are not receiving continued care. The implications for the education and advocacy roles of occupational therapy with older adults with visual impairments are highlighted.

EL-OTD II student Arti Gandhi is working with Assistant Professor Dan Fulford in the Approach Motivation & Participation (AMP) Lab. Arti is currently working on creating a paradigm to measure what motivates people with schizophrenia to engage in social interaction. The goal of the research is to help identify the point at which people with schizophrenia struggle with wanting social connection but are having difficulties with taking action. This paradigm will be used to guide intervention to improve social and occupational performance outcomes.

Clinical Assistant Professor Robin Newman developed an occupational therapy group intervention for women who have survived cancer and are now living with cognitive effects of treatment that may impact their participation in meaningful daily activities. The purpose of the intervention is to help the women generate and share strategies to address their challenges, which ultimately supports their participation in desired activities. The women meet with Robin on an individual basis to identify their goals and desired activities. Following individualized goal setting sessions, the women meet in a weekly group for 5 weeks to support each other, and to problem solve effective strategies to manage their daily activities.

The EL-OTD I students recently worked with BU engineering students to design assistive devices. The EL-OTD students brainstormed ideas for assistive devices and the engineering students drafted designs for 3D print prototypes. The OT students and engineering students collaborated to critique the designs and made recommendations for improving the devices.
