UPCOMING: NU Africana Studies is thrilled to announce our third annual bell hooks symposium on our Boston campus, taking place on February 2 from 10-5 in EV 17! It will feature scholars from all around the country, including some professors and students from our university community.

This year's theme is Black Feminist Worldmaking, exploring the possibilities of how to construct a world aligned with Black feminist philosophy.

UPCOMING: As we celebrate the three-year anniversary of NU Africana Studies' bell hooks symposium, we are proud to announce the first ever symposium event outside of Boston: Education as the Practice of Freedom: The Black Feminist Classroom, happening in Oakland at Mills College!

This event will be taking place on March 22, 2024 from 10 AM-5 PM PST in Lisser Hall.

Community spotlight: For NEU students and faculties! Chinese Culture through Film class (CHNS 3800) is going to make two Service-Learning presentation at two Chinese senior housing communities as part of their final project. The community coordinator at each site is going to gather 20-30 Chinese elders for the event. Please find the time and location on the flyer, and the recommended transportation here:
To 178 Tremont St: 1) Take the Orange Line to Chinatown. Walk 4 minutes; 2) Take the Greenline E line to Boylston stop. Walk 2 minutes.
To 835 Huntington Ave: 1) Take the Greenline E line, ride 4 stops, get off at Mission Park stop (about 15 min.) 2) Take a ride with D**g Laoshi's car, which is going to be Ryder Lot at 2:30 pm on Saturday

UPCOMING: This year, NU Africana Studies is excited to bring you not one but TWO bell hooks symposia within the Northeastern network!

The Boston symposium, titled Black Feminist Worldmaking, will be taking place from 10 AM-5PM on Friday, February 2, 2024. The Oakland symposium, which is on Education as the Practice of Freedom: The Black Feminist Classroom, is on March 22, 2024 from 10-5.

Both of these events are open to the public. We hope to see you there!

UPCOMING: If you are a student who is interested in experiential learning and would like to travel to Ghana this summer, there are two different options for you to take a Dialogue of Civilizations in 2024.

The first, taking place in Summer 1 from May 11-June 11, will be exploring Education and Learning in Ghana, and students will experience the culture of Ghana through visiting schools on the primary, secondary, and university levels.

The second, which will be in Summer 2 from July 6-August 6, will explore Health Systems, Services, and Education in Ghana. Students will have the opportunity to visit and volunteer at various hospitals, clinics, schools, and medical training facilities.

There are information sessions for both dialogues on Sunday, December 3rd, at 6pm. Links to the interest forms for these Dialogues can be found in the flyers below.

TODAY: Are you interested in watching a film about the Black female immigrant experience in France? If so, please consider visiting Churchill 103 at 6:30 PM tonight for a screening of the film Saint Omer, hosted by the French Program and cosponsored by Africana Studies!

The film focuses on the life of Rama, a Black French novelist who travels to Saint Omer for the trial of Laurence Coly, a Senegalese immigrant accused of murdering her 15-month-old child. Rama, who wishes to share Coly's story as a modern retelling of the Greek tale of Medea, quickly finds that the two women are more similar than she expected, which raises concerns about her own life.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

STUDENTS: The Terry Kershaw Essay Contest is now underway! Undergrad and grad students are invited to submit essays on any aspect of the Africana experience, including but not limited to arts, history, politics, and social policy. Winners will be invited to attend the Terry Kershaw Student Luncheon and present a synopsis of their essays at the 4th Annual NCBS Luncheon.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Africana Studies associated faculty member Dr. Ted Landsmark was interviewed by WCVB as part of an article on the city of Boston's struggle to provide affordable housing due to a lack of funding from tax-exempt organizations.

In the article, Landsmark speaks from his position as a Boston Planning and Development Agency board member and offers insight on current mayoral efforts to fulfill campaign promises about funds for housing.
