NCCU Attorney Spotlight: Erika Johnson

Erika is an assistant district attorney in Durham working on the Special Victims team. Most of her prosecutorial experience is in domestic violence while her current caseload consists of domestic violence and child victims (abuse and sexual assault).

She found her way to Durham in 2010 when she left her hometown of Baltimore, MD to attend North Carolina Central University. Erika is a double Eagle as she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2014 and Juris Doctor in 2017 from NCCU. While in law school, Erika interned with the Person (and then Caswell) County District Attorney’s Office. She joined the North Carolina Bar as a licensed attorney in August 2017 and started working at the Durham County District Attorney’s Office in March 2018.

She has always been committed to fighting social injustice and credits this as her reason for becoming involved in law. Erika is not new to civic engagement as she undertook many projects while earning her political science degree. At NCCU she was elected to serve as president of the Alpha Chi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. during her junior & senior year.

In her short time as a prosecutor, Erika has held multiple positions to include jail court, Drug Treatment Court, Domestic Violence, Special Victims, and being a representative from the DA's Office for various organizations advocating for victims.

Erika's husband, Dwayne, is an Assistant Principal for Person County Schools. Together they have two children, Erik and Lola, who are the joys in their lives. Their family currently resides in Burlington, NC.
