Happy World Bee Day!!

On this day we celebrate all bees (honey, bumble, mason, carpenter, leafcutter, sweat....the list goes on and on) and what they bring to our environment and lives. Please join me in sharing with others the benefits of our bees and pollinators as well as the importance of NOT using pesticides.

Today is another one of those unseasonably warm days (60 deg in February in Massachusetts- so wonderfully bizarre), and the bees are LOVING IT! They're shaking off their winter cabin fever and are taking cleansing flights. Happy Bees!

5 happy hives...on a wintry day.

Just about done force feeding my hives. The girls went through these jars (and more still in the other hives) in 2 days. I need to invest in Domino sugar. 😁 On the plus side...despite a critical drought all summer, the hives have thrived. Let's hope this is a good sign for winter. So grateful for the time spent with such cool little beings. .

Fall is here, temps are dropping and your queen will slow down laying eggs. Now is time to check if your bees have enough honey stores in the deeps to prepare for winter. The rule of thumb I use is 60-100 lbs of honey in the deeps. On warm days will check to see that there are 4-6 frames with honey or nectar in each deep. I will also heft the hive to get an estimate of the honey weight. If the hives are light, I will force feed the hives with 2:1 sugar syrup. But, keep in mind all liquid feed must be stopped when daytime temps drop consistently below 55 deg F. Hope this helps. How are your hives doing?

Great video of something we don't often see during our inspections, but we know exist in our hives: varroa mites. Be sure to test and treat to keep your hives healthy.

Sometimes honeybees share the hive with other insects that pose absolutely no problem for the hive in any way. That said, with every inspection I keep an eye out for pests that CAN be a problem (ex. wax moths, small hive beetles). Fortunately strong hives can defend themselves well against the bad pests.
