“Children indeed love flowers, but they need to do something more than remain among them to contemplate their colored blossoms. They find their greatest pleasure in acting, in knowing, in exploring, even apart from the attraction of external beauty” Maria Montessori, The Discovery of the Child.

Every year, students that graduate from our Adolescent Program create a legacy project to give back to their school. In the past, students have planted a native tree. This time, students created a Fruit Tree Guild around a PawPaw and an American Plum that had been donated by past graduates.
A Fruit Tree Guild is a permaculture technique where a central fruit tree is surrounded by a community of mutually beneficial plants. Thus, they create a mini-ecosystem that improves soil fertility, attracts pollinators, repels pests, and suppresses weeds with minimal maintenance.
Our students started by winter sowing native seeds so they may undergo the needed moist- cold stratification. Later, they prepared the garden area by removing existing grass and amending the soil with compost. Finally, they installed their plants.
These students will be able to appreciate the fruit of their efforts for years to come, every time they come back for a visit!
