UPDATE: the event finished early - we're already packing up. Apologies to those who were planning to join us at 4pm. The time with the students was *amazing*, but the minute the buses loaded, the place cleared out.

TODAY IS THE DAY! Join us at the Woodstock High School football field this afternoon for launching fun!

STEMstock is a fundraiser for the WHS STEM classes - $5 at the gate to get in, and vendors / activities on the football field. WHS students get in first, then it opens to the public from 4-5pm Friday, 8/28.

If you've been thinking about checking us out, this is an easy opportunity, while providing a small contribution toward a good cause. We'll have compressed air rockets (with multiple launchers) and a new dodgeball throwing trebuchet!

New after school robotics program!

One of our local schools reached out to us & said their students had expressed interest in an after school Intro to Robotics program... could we help out? So we've been busy working through the materials and week-by-week details to create a spectacular after school robotics option.

Today we visited the school to share the bot that the students will make - and the students really enjoyed playing with it! We had it in light-following mode and handed the kids a flashlight... and it followed the kids around the room like a puppy :)

We're heading to the GCCA Innovation Expo in September!

Thanks to our amazing partners at Parker-Chase Preschool - West Cobb, we've been invited to the Georgia Child Care Association's Innovation Expo. Instead of just having a booth or speaking, we've been asked to provide midday activities for team competitions, which honestly is a much better representation of what we offer, so we're thrilled!

We look forward to seeing many familiar faces and making even more new connections!

We had a great afternoon last week at the Marietta History Center discussing potential partnership opportunities! They had such nifty things in the 2nd floor museum - including a photography feature and a morse code keyer... so of course we had to share our homemade zoetrope and a morse code keyer made from "junk drawer" components.

We look forward to working together in the future!!

Day 1 of "Teach the Teachers" is in the books, and it was *almost* perfect. Such a fun time with some really spectacular Woodstock High School teachers.

In spite of (multiple) technical challenges, Quincy L. Acklen provided engaging instruction on soldering, electronics & breadboards, microcontrollers, and a little bit of work with sensors. (While Jennifer Acklen thoroughly enjoyed heckling with the "back of the class" crowd ;) )

We ran into a roadblock using the Chromebooks to push firmware onto our Raspberry Pi Picos. BUT NEVER FEAR -- the issues have now been identified and addressed, and we can't wait to resume Thursday afternoon!!

Last week we debuted Meteorology / Build a Weather Station!!

Quincy L. Acklen had the kiddos completely engaged demonstrating the earth rotation & revolution how how that creates our seasons, showing them how to build and understand homemade thermometers, barometers, and anemometers - and each class got to keep a set of devices (plus a larger 3D printed weathervane & anemometer for the school). For the take-home activity, each student made a basic anemometer... aka a pinwheel! Then for the finale, we discussed how crashing molecules and the build-up of charges enables lightning - making our own mini-lightning bolts inside!

Observation...
It was surprising to see how little the kiddos knew about the seasons or what causes weather, since *we* certainly remember covering those items in elementary school. But the kids say they don't cover that material until middle school. ....?.... Either way, we were pleased to introduce (or remind) them about basic earth & atmospheric science in a fun way!!

Junkyard Engineering was a crazy time - It was another great learning opportunity, and it certainly stretched our abilities as we ended up with 5 classes (instead of 2) and kiddos as young as 2 years old! Definitely not the ages or size we designed the program for, but we made it work (barely!).

Our biggest challenge with Junkyard Engineering is that there are *too many* fun things to do.

WHAT WE DID: cardboard "tank" races; evaluated how lemons, apples, and potatoes powered LEDs; built our own electronic candles with popsicle sticks and binder clips; built a cardboard modular ball/marble race; and had a fun free-play station where the kiddos got to use our Beaver Bot (knock off of the ChompSaw) to cut their own designs, play with the cardboard mini-golf set, or play in the 6' tall cardboard rocket.

WHAT WE COULDN'T DO: Buoyancy bottles, cardboard ball catchers, homemade pulleys and cranes from paper towel rolls, mini-projectors from toilet paper rolls, etc etc. Seriously so many nifty things we could do if only we had enough time.

We're thinking this might be a spectacular AFTER SCHOOL course to offer, since we can build on the students' accomplishments week-by-week, and offer more advanced options for the 3rd-5th graders vs the K-2nd graders.
