Working in a job with a high frequency of trauma exposure increases the likelihood of developing compassion fatigue. According to the American Institute of Stress, compassion fatigue is “the emotional residue or strain of exposure to working with those suffering from consequences of traumatic events.”
Compassion Fatigue is similar but different from burnout, because it is not necessarily trauma-related.
Studies show that practicing mindfulness for even a few minutes a day can help— along with practicing healthy boundaries.
