Buckley Country Day School

Buckley Country Day School is an independent, coeducational day school providing a superior elementary education.

Buckley Country Day School was founded in 1923 and opened the doors of its first building in Great Neck to a class of twenty-three children. In 1955, as the school’s enrollment continued to increase, Buckley moved to its current location in the Village of North Hills in Roslyn.

A little rain didn’t get in the way of third grade’s fun today on their field trip to the Queens Zoo!
Not only did our Buckley third graders touch snakes and see sea lions jump into water, the third grade class also adopted an alpaca!! He will live at the Queens Zoo, but can be visited whenever. The alpaca’s name, you ask? To be determined by the third graders!

🎶 The circus is…here, hooray, hooray!! 🎶
The Kindergarten Circus, the greatest show at Buckley, and its performers dazzled as always! Their talented and daring acts blew our audience away and we are so proud of them! After the circus, the Kindergartners were treated to a terrific circus party organized by our parents!

Thank you to the Kindergarten teachers, Dr. Glennon, Mrs. Chun, the maintenance and dining team, the parent volunteers and most importantly: the Class of 2032!

We are delighted to announce a new program for Buckley families! The Buckley Summer Kick Off will fill the space between school ending and camp beginning. What an awesome way to “kick off summer!”

Children will participate in exciting, exploratory classes with their favorite Buckley teachers. They will adventure through Buckley’s immense outdoor campus and cool off in the pool. It is a chance to hold onto school year friendships, make new friends across grades, and build a special bond with new or old teachers.

Every child is provided with snack, lunch, three dazzling workshops, and FREE SWIM!

Come see a new side of Buckley where the walls of classrooms are blurred and adventures await. All children are invited to play and learn together to kick off the best summer yet.

The Class of 2024 thus far has been brave, vulnerable and wise beyond their years when sharing their eighth grade speeches and our speakers last Friday were no different.

Thank you to Eliza, Nick and Homer for sharing their insights on the power of self confidence, what can be achieved through determination and the importance of self-discipline. Bravo to the latest trio for sharing their stories to the community!

Did you know BCDS is an affiliate school of Advancing Literacy, Teachers College, Columbia University? Advancing Literacy is committed to working side-by-side with educators to support literacy instruction in grades K-8 through research and professional development to bring literacy success - and joy - to all children.

As part of the network of Teachers College affiliate schools, Buckley is able to take advantage of the following:
• A TC consultant provides monthly on-site professional development for Buckley teachers as shown in these photos
• Buckley teachers are eligible to attend conference days at TC throughout the year to support their work in reading, writing, content-area literacy, and data-based assessment at specific grade levels. The day-long workshops are staffed by national literacy leaders.
• Workshops are offered for parents that give them the opportunity to listen to experts in literacy education and learn how to support their children’s growth in reading and writing.

Advancing Literacy, much like Buckley, is driven by a growth mindset and we are incredibly grateful and fortunate for this partnership!

Pre-Nursery is always busy learning through play! In their current math unit, our students are reinforcing their number recognition, sequencing and identification skills with puzzles, toys and games. A favorite game includes puzzle pieces that are numbered 1-10 on the bottom and need to be placed in the correct order to make the image of either a spider, cricket or bumble bee.
In their study on shapes using “Big Math for Little Kids, students are exploring triangles and learning they have 3 sides. The children were given 3 popsicle sticks to create triangles.
We are so proud of our youngest learners!

On Friday, Buckley held its annual Red & Blue Math Bee. Contestants from 1st through 8th grade competed on problems created by Mrs. Wiener, Mrs. Serra, and Mrs. Rodriguez-McLean.

The Red team won this year, 18 to 17!

Congratulations to our eager participants and a huge shoutout to Mrs. Wiener, Mrs. Serra, and Mrs. Rodriguez-McLean for organizing this year’s Math Bee and teaching our students!

Happy International Women’s Day!!
The contributions to the Buckley, and broader, community made by the women of BCDS are endless!
Just ask our math teachers: Ms. Serra, Ms. Rodriguez-McLean and Ms. Weiner.

On these grey and rainy days, we are daydreaming about our trip to Europe!
In June 2023, 29 very eager 7th and 8th graders (and 4 very prepared chaperones) traveled through four countries in 10 days.

Students visited:
📍the city of Nice in France 🇫🇷
📍Monaco 🇲🇨
📍the cities of Florence, Rome, Pompeii and five villages of Cinque Terre in Italy 🇮🇹
📍Vatican City 🇻🇦

We learned, explored and made countless memories on this once in a lifetime trip! Counting down the days until June 2024!

As we begin the month of March, we’re looking back at our Black History Month celebration assembly. While time has been set aside in February, our celebration at Buckley was meant to highlight that Black history is an integral part of American history, beyond the limits of what we learn about it during Black History Month.

During the assembly, our chorus performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” accompanied by our band and string musicians, our dance company presented a special performance they choreographed, and students used dramatizations to discuss key moments in the fight for freedom and equality and contributions to American society.

Thank you to Mrs. Demopoulos, Dr. Glennon, Ms. Kim, Dr. Park, Dr. Toler, and our student performers for preparing this very special celebration of Black History Month for our community.

A day so special it could only happen during a leap year! Today we had a terrific day with fourth grader, Carlo, at the helm as Head of School for the day!

Some of Carlos’ decisions were:
- a dress down day for all
- a dodgeball game, organized by Mr. Boyle, for the fourth grade during extended recess
- breakfast for lunch
-an ice cream truck for fourth grade dessert and Chef Jacek’s famous brookies for everyone

Thank you for an unforgettable day, Carlo!

Welcome back, BCDS! We hope you had a rejuvenating break! We didn’t waste any time getting right back into the swing of things today!

In science class with Ms. Vera, our fourth graders conducted a simulation with pompoms, pipe cleaners and baking soda to examine the roles bees play in pollination.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
This month Buckley students participated in the “Valentines for Veterans” project sponsored by the Nassau County Executive. Students made valentines which were distributed to our veterans in hospitals and nursing homes.
They sent their heartfelt wishes to veterans thanking them for their service and letting them know that their sacrifices for our country have not been forgotten.
Fourth graders, Olivia and Ethan presented the valentines to maintenance team members, Kevin Meaney and Brendon Shunk who delivered them to the County Executive’s office for distribution.

Our third graders dazzled at their Living Biography Museum presentations last week!

For this project, students chose their biography book in class and completed a presentation to share with their audience. This museum featured students dressing up as their famous person and showcasing the information they learned! From King Tut to Albert Einstein - it was impossible to leave without learning something new!

Bravo third grade!

At BCDS, we are big believers in the benefits of playing outside, no matter the weather! Just ask Ms. Dorothy’s nursery students who bundled up and had some fun in the snow today! Afterwards the snow became a fun sensory activity inside.

It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day! At our weekly assembly last Friday, Dr. Juhel reminded us that today is not just “a day off from school,” but rather a day to celebrate and think about the legacy and work of MLK. Our students have spent time learning about him and how his impact is still felt today.
