This Labor Day we're recognizing and giving a giant SCOPE round of applause to the campers, their families, and communities all across the country for swimming, walking, rumbling, dancing, running a color run, donating leftover canteen funds, writing letters to SCOPE campers, and taking a moment in your summer to give the gift of camp to the children SCOPE helps to serve!
These initiatives have raised funds to
provide 120 camperships (and counting!) for children from underserved communities and low-income families to attend overnight camp at one of our SCOPE partner camps!!!
Because of our community's dedication to SCOPE's mission, we are making a difference in the lives of the children SCOPE supports, together. THANK YOU!

Dear Camp Director:
My name is John Scott-Richardson. I am an enrolled tribal member of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal Nation in North Carolina and currently live in New York City. I am contacting you because of some important concerns our Native American community have regarding your camp’s activities and curriculum regarding Native American culture. Your camp’s activities and curriculum using Native American culture have been found to be culturally inappropriate and very disturbing. The issues were discovered from recent research of summer camp programs.
In addition to being an enrolled tribal member, I have been involved with Indian Education and am a cultural presenter. I work with and am an active board member of the following organizations: North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, American Indian Community House, Amerinda INC, Safe Harbors NYC, North Carolina Museum of History, U.S. Federal Census, and Images for Inclusion as well as presented at several museums and education institutions.
In reviewing the camp’s website and page, the misuse of Native American images, logos, song titles and outfits have been found to be used inappropriately. The items of Native American origin found to be used inappropriately include: the totem featured in front of a building, headdresses and Native appearing regalia worn, as well as the “pow wow” featured during the night which is not correctly depicted of authentic Native American culture. And this is only from what is seen from the surface, from the school’s online representation.
These items and customs hold a very significant place in Native American culture. They are not used unless given the right and permission by clan mothers, chiefs or spiritual leaders of those specific communities. They have stories, and carry sacred duties and responsibilities that come from specific regions of Native American tribes and communities. Each item and custom have a spiritual history and background. Use of these items in play or mock situations that involve youth at an impressionable age belittles our Native American people and culture, and is grossly miseducating your students.
The result of that miseducation reinforces harmful stereotypes and does not show respect to Native American culture. It sends a message to youth that sacred items are to be played with and that items from another culture can be taken and used disrespectfully. It teaches youth that what is to be held sacred can be made fun of and mocked. This also reinforces an entitlement mentality to your students. It damages future relations your students will have with Native American individuals and other cultures in their future. The disrespect of Native Americans is damaging to our Native American community as a whole, damaging the self-esteem of our Native American youth, and the list goes on.
Native American culture has immense value just like any other culture in the world. Camp Pierce is not honoring that in any way. Native Americans have been systemically marginalized and misrepresented since 1492. It is way past the time we change this narrative. There is a proper and respectful way of doing so. This would highly benefit the children and families who are a part of your program.
I believe your camp has good intentions with the other parts of the learning curriculum. I would like to offer a few suggestions moving forward in regards to your Native American activities. If you truly would like to do the best for your students and honor native culture, the following would be a good beginning:
Include Native American consultants from tribal communities in the state of New York or the Native based organizations in NY to help teach authentic Native customs and to assist in depicting Native American items in a culturally sound and respectful way in an educational environment.
Include Native American youth at the camp and have them be part of the programs.
Offer scholarships to bring marginalized community youth to your camp.
Consult with tribal leaders on having an authentic powwow with actual native drummers, dancers, storytellers and vendor/ craft makers.
Remove the Native American appearing logo/mascot from your program.
These actions are recommendations. Native American people have fought long and hard to be fairly treated and recognized in the United States and the larger world. Native American efforts are supported by the United Nations Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous People’s as written in the link featured below:
https://www.un.org/development/desa/indigenouspeoples/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2018/11/UNDRIP_E_web.pdf
Please read this declaration, and as educators I urge you to address these concerns. Several schools and institutions of higher learning have changed curriculum and lesson plans to properly address historical injustices and give truth as we build a new tomorrow for our youth. The goal is that ALL of our youth can experience equality, equity and value. It is way past time for change. There are many qualified tribally enrolled people just a phone call away. With all we as human beings are dealing with in our world today, let’s be wise and do things correctly and be mindful of our steps and how they will impact generations to come after us. “WE ARE STILL HERE!”
Please contact me for more information to begin the process of positive change to your Native American curriculum. This will not only highly beneficial for your students now, but will also benefit future generations in learning and respecting Native American culture.
I am available for open dialogue and will respectfully await your response.
Thank You, Pi la’huk
