Every client I work with I always keep a detailed baby log about the time I’ve spent with their baby. It’s important when in my off time the parent does the same thing. Days get ahead of us and it’s easy for us to all forget the last time the 👶🏼 baby fed, how much they fed, and even when they 💩 pooped last! 🥼 The pediatrician will also ask these types of questions at wellness to make sure your 👶🏼 baby is thriving and getting what they need.

I personally am old 🏫 school, and usually write in a notebook 📒, and my current favorite is the newborn care log by because it’s filled with organized spaces for everything that you would need to track, and more.

It’s extremely beneficial to know what’s going on with your baby 👶🏼 day by day so you can always find their natural rhythm. If things ever become a little off, you will be able to spot them right away and be able to help your baby 👶🏼 quicker because you will know their patterns.

This week is Black Breastfeeding week! 🤱🏿

Black women deserve to have their voice heard and be recognized in a society where they deserve representation during their postpartum phase and journey.

Black women in the United States still experience unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes. The social burdens Black mothers experience starts early, with a lack of breastfeeding education, promotion, and lactation support. Inequities in access to appropriate health care during the postpartum phase, puts breastfeeding out of reach for many Black mothers.

Supporting Black mothers is important, so we all need to do our part to close the gap and support Black woman everywhere.

YAY! You get to bring the baby home! 👶

You just spent a few days in the hospital giving birth, you’re sore, and you may be feeling unprepared and extremely exhausted. That’s totally normal.

Bringing your baby home can be blissful though at the same time. This is where you start to find your footing as a parent, and where you start the next part of your life with your new edition.

Create spaces around the house for feeding and changing. It will create a more comfortable and flexible environment to do whatever you need to do in that space verse going to another area of the house. Accept the help from family and friends, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind washing a bottle or two for you while they are there, picking up a meal for you, etc!

I am also here to help during those first months to make that transition feel effortless, and to help you create an environment around the house that makes handling the day to day with your newborn feel more natural.

Overall, enjoy these beginning days as much as you can. It will only happen once ❤️

Isn’t this the truth mamas!? This one just cracks me up because it’s so accurate. 😋

It just goes to shows you that our babies love us no matter what we look like.

Feeding your baby is what’s most important, not always how we look! 🤩

Did you know that just this year that the Los Angeles County board of supervisors with collaboration from has named Aug-16-22 as "Asian Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week!” This is a group of passionate people who are dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding in the Asian Community.

Los Angeles Country is working on changing the current struggles in the county such as:

🤱🏻 Corporate interests that promote formula as better than breastmilk.

🤱🏻 Lack of lactation education for physicians & clinical practices that are not breastfeeding-friendly.

🤱🏻 Only 6% of lactation professionals in LA are Asian.

🤱🏻 Almost half of Asian Americans in the San Gabriel Valley are limited in English proficient, yet prenatal medical visits offer little breastfeeding education using language-appropriate materials.

🤱🏻 Parenting style is deeply rooted in Asian culture and is not always congruent with current Baby-Friendly hospital practices.

Their Current and Future Plans are:

Provider Engagement: Training Asian obstetric offices to provide prenatal breastfeeding education to patients.

Community Engagement: Creating a website that translates to the many Asian languages that has breastfeeding materials and Asian Breastfeeding services, and establishes a social media presence with an Asian page.

Public Campaign: Implementing a photo voice project funded through Birth Equity Leadership Academy with a goal of normalizing breastfeeding in the Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley.

Plan for Sustainability: Expand membership to include Asian businesses, advocacy groups and more health care facilities; evaluate the impact of our efforts.

Provider Engagement: Conduct key informant interviews to learn views/perspectives of Asian health professionals, resulting in targeted breastfeeding education and recommendations for system changes.

Workforce Development: Identify current Asian IBCLCs in Los Angeles County. Create opportunities to develop more Asian lactation professionals through the BreastfeedLA Lactation Education Specialist (LES) training program.

Having these resources and education to help more in our community is extremely important to me as a care provider. I hope to continue to hear more amazing things coming from this group and be a part of something so amazing and influential to our community. ❤️

Using a Nursing pillow really helps save your back, neck and shoulders when feeding your baby. It helps support your baby close to your body and does a lot of the work for you. 🤱🏻

Having the right pillow that works for your body and baby is important since it can help create or encourage a good latch and keep your baby at the right height for nursing comfortably. 🤱🏼

Nursing pillows aren't just for nursing moms- bottle fed babies can benefit from them too. I personally love using the pillow when I am bottle feeding a baby on the job. Bottle feeding can be even more taxing on your back and shoulders, so investing in a great pillow will really help your posture. 🤱🏿

I also love to show Dads that they can also use them while they feed the baby. Having a boppy pillow can really help your posture and create a comfortable feeding time for everyone! 🤱🏽

Have you tried using a boppy pillow while feeding your baby?

There is no right or wrong way to hold and feed your baby. You will find what position works best for you and what is most comfortable, and don’t forget to grab your water and a snack before you begin feeding! 🍎

Did you know there are 11 commonly used ways to breastfeed? 🤱🏻

🌿 Laid-back Breastfeeding, or reclined position- People call this position the "biological nurturing position," and it's typically one of the first ones Mamas try. The baby is placed on your chest or tummy as soon as the baby is born, and you allow the baby to instinctively work their way toward your breast to attempt to latch on, also known as the "breast crawl" Isn't life super amazing? I just love how our instincts are always so spot on, even from birth!

🌿 Dangle Feeding- This position has your baby lying on their back on a flat surface, while you lean and crouch over them on all fours and 'dangle' your ni**le into their mouth. Some Moms say that it helps if they have conditions like mastitis and they don't want their baby squashed up against their breast.

🌿 Nursing in a sling- This is something you definitely would need to practice, but breastfeeding on the go is extremely convenient when you are out and about and trying to get things done.

🌿 Upright breastfeeding or Koala Hold- This is a hold that I have noticed that slightly older babies prefer since they sit straddling your thigh and have their head upright as they feed.

🌿 Rugby Ball Hold, You will sit with your baby laying along your forearm. Their body tucks alongside your side with their feet toward the back of whatever you are sitting on.

🌿 Cross Cradle Hold, Looks similar to the Cradle hold, but your arms would switch roles so your baby's body is lying along your opposite forearm. This works best with smaller babies, or newborns so you can fully support their head/neck/shoulders to allow them to tilt their heads prior to latching.

🌿 Dancer Hand Nursing Position- If you are struggling or having a hard time with your baby staying latched, or have a baby with premature conditions, this could be for you! You cup your breast with your hand underneath, fingers on one side and thumb on the other. Then you edge your hand forwards so your thumb and index finger form a "U-shape" just in front of the breast. Rest your baby's jaw on your thumb and index finger while they feed.

🌿 Cradle Hold, The most commonly used position! You are sitting upright with your baby on their side, and their neck and head are laying along your forearm and their body is against your stomach.

🌿 Double Rugby Ball Hold (which is for twin tandem feeding)

🌿 Laid back breastfeeding after a C-Section, If you are struggling with comfort after your cesarean this may help. Laying your baby's body across your shoulder will help keep the baby's weight or pressure off your wound while you heal.

🌿 Side-Lying Position, Ideal for relaxed feeding and breastfeeding in bed or laying down on the couch.

Being comfortable and relaxed during your breastfeeding sessions is the most important thing for you and your baby. Our bodies have natural instincts and can provide amazing things for our children. If you need any additional help or support I encourage you to contact your Lactation Consultant during those times to continue your journey and help you better feed your baby.

Also, feeding your baby whatever means is the way to go! If breastfeeding isn't your plan in action that's great too! Just remember that feeding is best, regardless if you breastfeed, chestfeed, pump, bottle feed, or formula feed. ❤️
