As we kick off the start of another week, this is a friendly reminder that dairy products like half and half and creamer are great additions to your morning cup of coffee or other breakfast drinks like smoothies. These products add protein and delicious flavor and serve as a great way to start off any day of the week!

This summer, I also had the opportunity to write for other magazines under Progressive Publishing, such as Ag Proud magazine, which is focused on Idaho farmers and ranchers.

One farm I wrote about is Seagull Bay Dairy located in American Falls, Idaho. The slogan of the farm is “Efficient production from a healthy herd,” and this slogan and business model has established the operation not only in southern Idaho but on a global scale for genetics and breeding top dairy cattle.

The farm’s story was a fun one to share, and I even connected with some of the farm owners at World Dairy Expo this year!

Dairy cattle breed associations have shaped the dairy industry by impacting genetics, breed progress, offering member resources, recordkeeping, classification services, leadership, scholarships and establishing a community for dairy cattle breeders.

It was fun to share a story about the history of these breed associations through staff members and dairy cattle breeders. I also learned a thing or two about the history of these dairy cattle breed associations and how they have impacted the dairy industry overall!

Another very impactful story to share through my summer internship was about Jessica Oliver, who serves as a mentor to others in the dairy industry by helping others to prepare and show their dairy cattle through 4-H and other organizations, especially since it can be challenging to become involved in showing dairy if you do not have many connections to the industry.

Jessica and her husband are parents to four young children and give back to the dairy community through their time and dedication toward helping others to succeed. Jessica was one of the sweetest people to talk with, and she is truly passionate about helping others feel like they have a place in dairy and are equipped with the knowledge to succeed!

Continuing on with some of the World Dairy Expo content I worked on for Progressive Dairy this summer, a fun story to tell was that of World Dairy Expo volunteers who contribute to the success of the event each year. Berta Hansen has volunteered to assist international guests at World Dairy Expo by serving as lead interpreter since the 1980s, and her role has allowed her to connect with many different people and leave a positive impact on guests of a major dairy industry event.

It was very fun to connect briefly with Berta at World Dairy Expo this year, and stories like this remind me how important it is to volunteer and give back to the dairy industry in various ways!

To round out the month of November, I wanted to feature a story I wrote for Progressive Dairy that hits especially close to home.

One of my favorite stories to share this summer was entitled “Benefits of dairy judging leaves lifelong impacts,” and this story focused on the benefits of dairy judging both from a student and coach’s perspective. This story allowed me to connect with former coaches and mentors of mine in the dairy industry, and learn from my peers about their journey in the industry and how dairy judging has left a positive impact on their lives. These benefits include public speaking, decision-making, time management, defending one’s decision, teamwork and making connections across the dairy industry.

This story was also one of the first I wrote this summer, and a special thanks to Progressive Dairy for allowing me to pursue stories that I am very passionate about!

A few weeks ago I shared more about my experiences with World Dairy Expo as a media intern, but before that, I had the chance to work on a few projects for World Dairy Expo through my internship with Progressive Dairy! The first of these projects involved creating infographics to showcase the schedule, events and helpful tips related to World Dairy Expo this year, and a youth infographic showcasing some of the top dairy youth who have participated at World Dairy Expo in recent years.

These projects were both fun and helpful in learning more about World Dairy Expo and its impacts on the dairy industry, and it was fun to connect with some good friends in the dairy industry through these infographics, such as my friend Haley who is also a student at the University of Minnesota!

Over the next few weeks, I wanted to share some of my stories from my summer internship with Progressive Dairy magazine! It has been really fun to see these stories shared to promote some outstanding farms, programs and stories in the dairy industry since my internship was completed at the end of this summer!

One of the stories I wrote was about 97 Milk, which is a grassroots effort to promote whole milk benefits and getting whole milk back as part of school lunch programs. These efforts are on behalf of dairy producers and dedicated individuals involved in the dairy industry.

To learn more about 97 Milk and the immense benefits of consuming whole milk, check out 97milk.com or their page, 97 Milk!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and time spent with family and friends! While this isn’t necessarily a dairy-related post, one of our family traditions is getting our Christmas tree to prepare for the holiday season! This year, we went as a family to get a real Christmas tree and support another industry related to agriculture. I am feeling so thankful to have spent time with family and friends this weekend and share in some of our favorite traditions! (And don’t worry, plenty of dairy products were consumed these last few days!)

Here’s to a great start to the holiday season and plenty of things to be thankful for!

P.S. Swipe right to see how many people it takes to cut down a Christmas tree 🎄

Just a few cute calves to kick off your Wednesday!

When I visited the farm where my younger sister, Sarah, boards her dairy cattle, these calves were all cozy and happy in their warm barn that is properly ventilated to maintain quality air. Many calf barns have these features to help keep calves healthy, especially as the temperatures get cooler in places like the Midwest!

I hope everyone is having a great start to the week!

To wrap up my recap, I wanted to give a special shoutout to the team that made the experience possible to serve as a Media Intern!

It was such a fun and educational experience serving as a Media Intern this year, and some of our tasks as a Communications team included writing press releases to share results from contests and shows, creating social media content throughout the week and preparing bios to be read about exhibitors and cattle during the Parade of Champions.

A special shoutout goes to Katie Schmitt and Jenna Langrehr who serve full-time on the World Dairy Expo Communications team and made it a great experience for our intern team! To my fellow interns, Ally, Katrina, Kelsey and Sarah, thank you for being such great teammates and talented advocates on behalf of the dairy industry - all of your futures are so bright!
