Small habits, done consistently over time, make the biggest difference.

At Skola we design a day that is vibrant and playful while honoring the importance and effectiveness of strong habits.

- Every Friday we celebrate a birthday, sharing what we appreciate about our classmate and calling out the Imago Dei qualities in them. That adds up to hours focused on the dignity and value of all people.

-Almost everyday we spend 3 1/2 hours outdoors in all types of weather. Over time this adds up to an appreciation of seasons and a connection to nature. We track our minutes throughout the whole year to see the tangible evidence of this commitment.

-Almost every day our students have 30-40 uninterrupted minutes to read. Over time this adds up to strong background knowledge, and readers of all abilities who simply enjoy books and the joy found in all sorts of genres.

-Almost every day our students clean up and do chores. Over time this helps them take better care of our supplies and feel in charge of their own environments.

- Every week we practice nature journaling, a unique class that combines scientific observation, art, writing and wellness. Over time this leads to students who know how to practice stillness, notice details and grow connected to their world.

Our habits are a big deal. The small things we give time and attention to add up. Microschools have the unique ability to be intentional about building strong habits, and our students are able to see their own growth over a school year, and feel the fruit of “small things” done well over time.

It’s the school day reimagined and we’re proud to be leading the way.

Our week was filled with Readers Theater, enjoying pre-algebra, finding a good book and plenty of time to enjoy it, Greek and Latin Roots, celebrating September/ October weather, and practicing those little things that keep our community healthy.

We’re an innovative K-8 Microschool and we chose to stay small so that we can restructure the school day to match research and what we all know to be good for kids and young teens.

We ebb and flow with the seasons. We believe in the power of play. We give our students the tools to be active community contributors. We practice caring for creatures and the neighborhood around us.

It’s the school day reimagined and we love leading the way.

WE’RE BACK!!!!!

Welcome to Skola Microschool - YEAR 5 (2026-2027)

We’ve built the school of our dreams and we’re excited and honored that you want to follow along - to see how the school day can be healthy and happy for both teachers and students.

Our aim is clear:
1) We get outside as much as possible. This typically means 3 hours every school day. We believe in this so strongly and we can’t wait to show you the benefits of this commitment throughout the entire school year.

2) We teach and foster healthy community. We know kids want to be invested members in a community. They want to be a part of something and use their gifts and abilities to help others. We teach emotional and relational intelligence and make time everyday to practice those skills in real time.

3) We let kids work outside of grade-level constraints. We personalize learning as much as possible because growth will ALWAYS MATTER more than outcomes. Our kids feel the pressure released from the places where it doesn’t matter, and they feel an energized focus and engagement where it does.

We thank you for following along our story. The time you give to learn more, to cheer us on, to widen our presence matters so much to us and we want to say THANKS!

Here’s your invitation to join the choir of people who are HOPEFUL about where teaching and learning is headed.

We love leading the way.

“Ending Well at The Bell”

We’ve set a strong tradition of spending our final school day together at the Bell Museum. We love our city, our neighbors, and learning about all of the creatures and cultures around us.

Our Skola family is built on trust, and genuine care for creation and one another. This takes investment, patience, courage, consistency, and time.

Thanks for following along for our fourth school year. We’re so proud of our school and we’ve enjoyed the chance to let you peek inside. We’ll take a long break from posting and squeeze the most out of the summer ahead of us. Check back in again in the fall - we’d love to take you on round FIVE!!

When we set out to build our dream school we knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but entirely possible if we could stick to some clear values and goals:

🍃 1) Let’s get students outside as much as we can! Skola is a part of a movement that believes in the cognitive, physical, and holistic benefits of more play, especially outdoors.

💙 2) Strong communities are not accidental. We intentionally teach our students how to navigate conflict, see creatures and neighbors, and be invested as friends and classmates.

🧠 3) Academic “sweet spots” happen when readiness meets the right challenge. We work hard to create learning environments that encourage our students to take charge, to show grit, to grow more curious and courageous. We aim to meet students where they’re at, and in turn they’ll love the process of learning more than any shallow outcome.

At Skola we put research into action. It’s the school day reimagined and we’re proud to be leading the way.

TELOS: It’s a Greek word that means ultimate purpose or end goal. Every institution has one, whether they’ve named it or not. So we think it’s worth asking out loud: what is school actually for?

Some say it’s academic achievement: Test scores, grades, college acceptance.

Others say it’s workforce preparation: Skills, credentials, employability.

Some say it’s socialization and building character: Learning to navigate systems, get along with others, to grow virtues and capacity to be a good person.

These are real goals. And they aren’t wrong, exactly…just many times oversimplified and incomplete.

We built Skola on a specific TELOS and we’d like to share it with you. We believe school should accentuate the most important parts of life:

- Finding purpose and value in a community
- Learning the flow between work, rest, and play
- Gaining grit and tackling good challenges
- Learning how to be in healthy relationships
- Asking good questions and staying curious
- Establishing consistent habits
- Taking good care of creatures and spaces
- Finding our talents and stewarding them

These aren’t extracurriculars. They’re not the “soft stuff” we get to once the real learning is done. This list IS the real learning. The center.

We believe the TELOS of education is a rich combination: to build character and virtue, to form strong, engaged citizens, to give kids the knowledge, skills, and habits they need to step into adulthood well and contribute to something bigger than themselves.

That’s what we’re building toward. Every day, in every room, on every hike. That’s our TELOS. And we think it’s worth building a whole school around it.

It is our JOY to design a school day that helps students connect with nature, creatures and neighbors.

We’ve built routines to help kids gain observation and conservation skills: slowing down to notice the beautiful spaces and creatures around us.

We track our hours outside every day, and our students take note of how the weather both changes and affects them, how the rain and the sun and the wind, and the newly hatching frogs, are all characters in our days together. We take time to honor a good, loving Creator.

We have eight school days left this year, and there’s a chance that we’ll clock 600 school hours outside! Our students are pumped, hopeful, and paying really close attention - knowing that this is a really big deal. Our students have grit because of this goal, and miles underneath their shoes. (Oh - and we have lots of ruined socks!)

We prioritize time outside because we know firsthand how healthy it is for humans of all ages. An average day at Skola means 3+ hours of unstructured play outside. It’s the school day reimagined and we’re proud to be leading the way.

Our week was filled with walks and hikes, glorious time at the library, catching baby snappers, percents and probability, the periodic table, a piano recital, practicing for our Charlie Brown production, and painting paper mache songbirds.

It’s glorious spring at Skola, and we love leading the way.

We’re a Christian Microschool. But we’d like to take a moment to go a little deeper into what we mean by this…

An integrated life isn’t one where faith and live sit in separate compartments — pulled out just for a class or chapel service, and tucked away the rest of the week.

It’s a life where everything connects. Where what you believe shapes how you see, how you think, how you move through the world.

That’s what we’re building at Skola. 🌿

This week, our learners were outside a lot and we took our weekly trip to the local library. Our students were reading, analyzing, collaborating, observing, noticing, wondering.

And woven quietly into all of it was the conviction that the world they were looking at MEANS something:
- That beauty is worth pausing for
- That curiosity is a form of reverence
- That the small, extraordinary details of creation point to something bigger than themselves.

We’re a Christian microschool. We believe the Bible and the message of Jesus. But more than wanting our students to know about faith, we want them to live from it. To have it so woven into who they are that it shapes the way they notice a spiderweb, ask a hard question, build a fort, and treat the librarian.

That’s integration.

School should accentuate the most important parts of life:

-finding purpose and value in a community
-learning the flow between work, rest and play
-gaining grit and tackling good challenges
-learning how to be in healthy relationships
-asking good questions and staying curious
-establishing consistent habits
-taking good care of creatures and spaces
-finding our talents and stewarding them

A truly excellent school day includes both meaningful skills-building work and the kind of unhurried moments that let a child just be a child. We believe both belong together. We are so grateful to be doing this work alongside families who believe in it too.
