Moving from Uncertainty to Connection - Pamela Connor 08/25/2021

How do we face uncertainty during these testing times, both as individuals as well as together? I started writing this a few weeks ago at the start of lockdown. I recently spoke with my friend and the overwhelming message that had already come out of their experience…presence….during a time of great uncertainty they adapted to living in the present. On reflection, a child’s natural state is to be present. Yet somehow in adulthood, we get detached from the importance of it, it can feel alien and strange. In the case of my friend, he loved seeing how his daughter responded to her day-to-day activities with joy and pleasure. Yes, she missed her friends. Yes, she missed scootering about in the park, but with no worry about what might come next, she was pottering about and living freely.

How to Deal with Uncertainty - Pamela Connor 08/24/2021

“The key to embracing change is learning to deal with uncertainty,” I said. In fact, it was the fourth time I had said it this week. I could hear them nodding on the phone. “I know” they said… “but how?”.
Uncertainty is something very few people enjoy or embrace. It shows up when we are made redundant; when we are applying for jobs; when we are thinking of going back to work; when we are forecasting our businesses; when we are waiting for a health diagnosis; when we are moving house, or navigating our way through our first pandemic…it shows up all the time and is probably the number 1 fear people have when they walk through my door.
Our brain tends to have irrational tendencies to over-react and turn the anxiety levels up to 11. I hear the words “I hate not knowing” or “I’m just not sure”. There is a feeling of being stuck, paralyzed by decision, or feeling out of control as decisions are made for you.
Uncertainty causes us to feel stressed out, anxious, and freaked out. The good news is that there are ways to fight those feelings of uncertainty. When we use them, we are able to control our responses and that, dear friend, is resilience.
