This summer, 8 rising sophomores traveled across southern Italy, exploring history, sustainability, agriculture, and culinary traditions while connecting with local communities and artisans. From preparing handmade pasta, to learning about making pecorino cheese from raw sheep’s milk, to tasting gelato made by an award-winning young chef, to visiting an apiary and learning about pollinators and biodiversity, to walking amongst the ruins of ancient civilizations and UNESCO World Heritage sites, to practicing centuries-old weaving and ceramic techniques, the students got a taste for all the “dolce vita” that Italy has to offer. 🇮🇹

Even better, alumna Chloe Johnston ‘04 and her company Chloe Johnston Experiences thoughtfully planned the trip and curated the entire itinerary.

In honor of Plastic-Free July, the global movement dedicated to reducing plastic waste, we’re reflecting on all of the sustainability initiatives at Agnes Irwin.

From collecting and recycling batteries and coffee pods, to diverting nearly 46,000 pounds of food scraps from landfills through our composting efforts with Mother Compost - Organic Waste Recycling Service since 2022, to partnering with the Villanova University Office of Sustainability to help set up a “Free Store,” filled with donated clothes for undergrads to shop, Agnes Irwin students in all three divisions are committed to keeping our earth green and our impact minimal! 🌎

In early June, 10 students had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for their Special Studies Program. These sophomores and juniors started the trip with homestays with local families and learned about the culture and daily life in Sarchi.

The group traveled to Puntarenas on Costa Rica’s Gulf of Nicoya and saw glowing marine plankton on a bioluminescence tour, went snorkeling at Curu Biological Reserve, and visited a sea turtle rescue. In the Curi-Cancha Wildlife Reserve in Monteverde, the girls saw a sloth with her baby, lots of monkeys, and geckos as they went zip-lining above the tree canopy.

They played soccer with local kids during a visit to Monteverde Friends School and capped off the trip with white-water rafting on the Sarapiquí River, hikes through the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, and a chocolate tour to learn about the cacao tree and the chocolate production process. What an incredible trip through several different ecosystems!
