If a school on your list offers interviews, do not skip the prep work!

Three things to keep in mind:
📌 Research your interviewer. Look at their background, their career path, and any overlapping interests with yours.

📌 Come with thoughtful questions. Ask about their experience, how they got involved, and what stood out to them about the school.

📌 Remember it is a conversation, not an interrogation. The more you know going in the more confident you will feel.

The Common App is Officially LIVE! 🎓🎉

August 1st is here, and the 2026–27 college application cycle is officially open on the Common App. Cue the panic? Hard no.
Take a deep breath. Today is the starting line for filling out college-specific questions and supplements, but there is nothing to submit today. Today is information gathering and answering.

What to focus on right now:

Transfer & Roll: Core info like your profile, family details, and personal essays roll right over if you started early.
    
Tackle Supplements: Now is the time to look at college-specific prompts that dropped today. Copy the writing prompt and word count limit and place into a separate doc to start to scaffold, brainstorm, and write.

Maximize your Merit Scholarship: Read in the common app for deadlines, check the university’s page, and then research scholarship opportunities to ensure that your application will be in before that deadline.

Pace Yourself: Early Action and Early Decision deadlines aren’t until November 1st. Slow and steady wins this race.

Do not skip this advice on your next campus visit. Coming from a counselor with 20+ years of experience.

📌 Pro tip: the second to last week of August is the best time to visit because students are back on campus and you can see the school come to life.

We visit college campuses so we can give our students the real picture, not just what is on the website. From info sessions and walking every inch of campus to checking out career services, student hangout spots, dining, and yes, even what is on the back of bathroom stall doors, we do the research so our students can make informed decisions.

💰 Winning an outside scholarship does not always mean your bill goes down unfortunately...

It is called scholarship displacement. You report an outside scholarship to the financial aid office and instead of lowering your bill, they adjust your existing aid package. The best case scenario is scholarship stacking where the outside award actually reduces what you owe, but very few schools handle it that way!

Ask about a school’s outside scholarship policy before you apply and definitely before you deposit.
