This picture was taken from another site with the OP stating: why we are losing our bees.

There were a lot of comments. None substantiated. Mostly it is beekeeper opinions.

Upon looking at the sequence in the diagram it occurs to me that only the newly hatched "house bees" take care of the young. The "field bees" do not care for the young.

My opinion is that unless the colony is already varroa mite infested, the illustration is not correct. Varroa mites are usually gestating in the drone brood cells only.

Hive style and hive management does have an impact on colony survival.

And as far as I know, Douglas County does not have a varroa mite "epidemic" or high threat. Although surrounding counties do and are experiencing high varroa mite problems.

What is your opinion?

I wonder if anyone could harness all this electricity! :)

Honeybee swarms generate more electricity per metre than a storm cloud Swarms of western honeybees can generate an electric charge of 1000 volts per metre, a voltage density greater than thunderstorm clouds and electrified dust storms

I found this map of the initial spread of Honey Bees interesting from their study so thought I would share it. About 10 miles a year - however people were moving hives so the advance is both swarms and human expansion and accelerated greatly as people neared the Mississippi as it opened up transportation routes.

Genetic past, present, and future of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) in the United States of America

Estimated A. mellifera population expansions in the mainland United States. Locations have been recorded or estimated from digitized importation records of European colonialists or their accounts of swarm sightings. Sightings are given a specific location if possible; otherwise, the date text is larger and imposed over the state or area the sighting occurred (Table S1). Color gradients are proposed ranges estimated by combining known sightings and introductions with an estimation of average yearly spread as (50 years -establishment date) × 16.5 km. Alaska has been excluded because honey bees were first introduced to the state in 1924 and cannot be attributed to a source population (Table S2). Dates before 1859 are exclusively A. m. mellifera sightings, but dates after 1859 can be attributed to A. m. ligustica , A. m. mellifera , A. m. ligustica x A. m. mellifera hybrids, and/or various A. mellifera hybrids.
