Helping parents earn while children learn. In Douglas County, childcare plays a much bigger role than many people realize. It helps parents work, supports local businesses and ensures our community has the workforce it depends on—from healthcare to skilled trades. For many families, childcare is not just a convenience—it is what makes earning a paycheck, continuing education and building a stable future possible. Programs like Employment Related Day Care (ERDC) help make that possible. We love celebrating educators and students. 🎉Across Oregon, conversations about low reading proficiency have put a spotlight on the importance of early literacy and the districts working hard to make real progress. In South Umpqua School District #19, that commitment shows up every day in their classrooms and is translating into exciting student growth.

Childcare providers: The small businesses powering Douglas County families

More than two-thirds of local childcare spots are offered in home-based settings and over 85% of sites and centers are run as small businesses. Whether in a center or in a home, licensed providers create safe, warm learning environments that help prepare children for school while also filling the role of business owners. Even though these providers run small businesses, childcare depends on a mostly female workforce that is often underpaid. Their dedication helps fill the gaps in a system that is still fragile for both families and providers.

🥳 Community members often ask how they can help support childcare. You can donate to the Childcare Provider Support Campaign through the Greater Douglas United Way, speak up for policies that increase childcare access, join the Douglas County Childcare Coalition or share messages that highlight childcare as essential. Those interested in getting involved or becoming a provider can find out more at childcareis.org
