We are excited to welcome our newest Panthers to kindergarten! To help students and families begin the year feeling comfortable, connected, and confident, we will once again use a Kindergarten Soft Start.

Our soft start gives teachers an opportunity to get to know each child, begin building relationships, practice school routines, and learn more about each student’s academic, social, and developmental needs before bringing the entire kindergarten group together.

Here is how the first week will work:

📅 Monday, August 31 & Tuesday, September 1
Each family will attend a 45-minute scheduled visit with their child. Students will meet both kindergarten teachers, spend time in the classrooms, and complete a few informal beginning-of-year activities with staff.

📅 Wednesday, September 2
Students who attended their family meeting on Monday will attend a full day of kindergarten.

📅 Thursday, September 3
Students who attended their family meeting on Tuesday will attend a full day of kindergarten.

📅 Friday, September 4
🎉 All kindergarten students attend together!

Throughout the week, students will have opportunities to spend time in both kindergarten classrooms. This allows our team to get to know each child and make thoughtful classroom placement decisions. Families will receive their child’s final classroom placement after Friday.

Families will be able to select their Monday or Tuesday meeting time during Meet the Teacher, and our kindergarten teachers will follow up with any families who are unable to attend.

We know starting kindergarten is a big milestone, and our goal is to make the transition as positive and welcoming as possible for both students and families. We can’t wait to meet our newest Panthers! 🐾💙

Something special happens in our classrooms before students ever walk through the door.

Our teachers are preparing for more than the start of a new school year. They’re learning names, preparing lessons and thoughtfully creating spaces where every child can feel welcomed, known and excited about what lies ahead.

Meet the Teacher is one of the first opportunities to begin building those connections. It’s a chance for students to meet the person who will be cheering them on throughout the year, become familiar with their new classroom and begin turning some of those first-day nerves into confidence and excitement.

It’s also the beginning of an important partnership with families. When teachers and families know, understand and support one another, we create a stronger foundation for students to learn, grow and thrive.

Elementary Meet the Teacher events are Thursday, Aug. 27:

Fir Grove: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Fullerton: 9:30–11:30 a.m.
Green: 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Sunnyslope: 4–6 p.m.
Eastwood: 12–2 p.m.
Wi******er: 4–6 p.m.
Hucrest: 1–3 p.m.
Melrose: 4–6 p.m.

Our teachers can’t wait to open their classroom doors and welcome students and families into the spaces they’ve been preparing especially for them!

Because before the lessons, projects and learning begin, there is something we want every child to know: You belong here. We’ve been preparing for you. And we’re so glad you’re here.

Make an Impact at the 2026 Back to School Bash!

Saturday, August 22 | 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Umpqua Community College

Join us for Douglas County's second annual Back to School Bash- a free community event helping students from preschool through college start the school year strong with free school supplies, haircuts, food, sports physicals, vaccines, family activities, and more.

We're looking for volunteers to help make the day a success. Roles include set-up, welcome & wayfinding, activity support, and clean-up.
