The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive insect that targets ash trees. They've already killed millions of trees through out North America and Europe. They were first sited in Oregon in 2022. Though they haven't made it to Douglas County, we all need to be alert.

To learn more about the EAB and other insects that damage trees, come to the Lunch and Learn workshop: Invasive Threats, Native Beetles, and Drought Stress on Friday November 13th, 2026. Registration is open and is $10 per person. Lunch comes with your registration!

At Extension, our dedicated volunteers are essential to helping us carry out our mission in communities across Oregon, and we are especially proud to celebrate one of Douglas County’s own!

Chris Rusch has been named the 2026 Volunteer of the Year for the statewide Ask Extension program, an honor presented at yesterday’s Awards and Recognition Ceremony on the OSU campus.

Chris has been a Master Gardener™ volunteer since 2010 and has served Extension and her community in countless ways. Her leadership has included serving as President of the Oregon Master Gardener Association, President of our local Douglas County chapter, manager of the Douglas County Plant Clinic, and more recently as a 4-H leader for the Junior Master Gardener Club.

Through Ask Extension, Chris shares her knowledge with people throughout Oregon, answering questions submitted from across the state with thoughtful, thorough, and research-based information.

Chris’s years of leadership, service, and dedication are a wonderful example of the impact Extension volunteers make every day.

Congratulations, Chris, and thank you for all that you do for Extension and the communities we serve!
