We are excited to announce a new course for graduate students this Fall!

CO-592 Interactive Storytelling with Data will teach you innovative ways to immerse audiences using data to tell meaningful and powerful stories with visual communication. You will learn to:

• find and analyze data about topics that matter to you and future employers
• use journalistic approaches for storytelling and gathering data
• use stories with data to explain complicated ideas and to humanize those ideas
• engage and immerse your audience with meaningful visuals

The class is offered in Fall 2021 on Thursday evenings from 6:05pm to 9pm. The course is team-taught by Professors Vujnovic and Cox from the Department of Communication. For more information about the course, please message [email protected] or [email protected]

“My Buddy: The WWII Documentary Project is a research and documentary group based out of Monmouth University (MU) in West Long Branch, NJ. The purpose of the project is to examine the military and cultural history of the 369th Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment during the WWII era, as well as the contributions of the 369th Veterans Association and the 369th Historical Society since the 1950s. This ongoing documentary project is based on original interviews conducted in 2004 with members of the 369th Veterans Association, additional interviews being currently conducted, as well as family photos and memorabilia, news articles, and other artifacts. The initial work suggests several important themes, including family, community, identity, masculinity, race, and social justice.”

“Framing practice-based discoveries as engaged scholarship, I consider the potential impact of immersive, embodied co-learning processes with inmates and the ways in which scholars, artists, and activists can help bridge divides between prisons, communities, and campuses. Situating this work within the U.S. history of mass incarceration, I argue that Alternatives to Violence Project workshops function as critical communication pedagogies that work to build community and the compassion needed to support activist movements for decarceration and social justice.”

Congratulations to the participants of our AVP-NJ basic workshop on Zoom this month! AVP challenges our society's habit of resorting to violence as a solution. We draw on people’s life experiences to help us transform violent attitudes into healthy ones. When not distancing due to the pandemic, AVP-New Jersey’s teams of trained volunteer facilitators lead workshops at community centers, social service organizations, and prisons in New Jersey. Participants can learn to serve as workshop facilitators, spreading peace to their own families, schools, workplaces, and communities.
