Today marks 25 years since our world changed forever.
On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent souls were taken from us, including 343 of our brothers and sisters in the fire service, 71 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel. They didn’t hesitate. They ran up the stairs as others ran down. They answered the call, knowing the immense danger, bound only by an unwavering duty to protect their fellow human beings.
For those of us who wear the uniform, 9/11 is not a history lesson. It is a sacred vow. It is a shadow that sits beside us in the cab of the rig, and a silent promise we carry into every home, every street, and every fire we encounter.
But September 11th isn't only a reflection of unimaginable loss, it is a monument to who we are when everything else is stripped away.
In our darkest hour, America didn't break. We didn't divide. We stood side by side in the dust and the ash, holding hands, digging through rubble, lining up to give blood, and hanging flags from every porch and overpass. We remembered what this country is truly about, quiet courage, selfless sacrifice, and a neighborly love that no amount of hate can ever tear down.
To the families who still sit at dinner tables with an empty chair, we see you, we honor you, and we carry your loved ones in our hearts today and every day.
To our community here in Romulus: thank you for allowing us to serve you, to protect you, and to stand as a guard in the night.
We will never forget the fallen. We will never forget the heroes. And we will never forget who we are when we stand together as one.
