While Officer Gomez recommends buying a lock for practice, you can also find free phone apps to allow students to practice!

A Simple Tip for Families with Students Starting Middle School

If you have, or know of, a child who will be moving into the grade where students begin using lockers this year (it varies by school district), here’s a simple tip that can make the first week of school much less stressful.

While you’re shopping for school supplies, consider picking up an inexpensive combination lock.

Your student likely won’t be able to use that lock at school, as most schools provide or require a specific lock. The one you purchase is simply for practice at home.

Every year, we see students become frustrated or even tearful because they’re trying to learn how to open a combination lock while also rushing to make it to class on time. It’s one of those small skills that can make a big difference in helping students feel confident on their first day.

A little practice over the summer can turn one less worry into one more success.
