CHAMBER PRESIDENT KICKS OFF ROME’s 4th ANNUAL 24-HOUR SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN TO HELP TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE MOST IN NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY

Lieutenant Tabitha Swires of The Salvation Army of Rome, shown with Bill, is leading a group of dedicated community volunteers and local officials, including New York State Senator Joseph Griffo (3-4pm today) and Rome Mayor Jacqueline Izzo (6pm today), in ringing the bells at a Salvation Army Red Kettle for a 24-hour period that began this morning at 10am, at the Rome Walmart Supercenter. Be sure to stop by and support the Rome Salvation Army!

Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles raise funds at Christmas to help meet local needs all year long. In Rome, that means supporting their food pantry, family support programs, seasonal youth programs, and emergency assistance programs all year long.

This year’s 24-hour Red Kettle will be split into two 12-hour shifts over two days to make the most of the event. Online donations to the 24-Red Kettle can be made by texting “RomeKettle” to 51555 during the two-day event. That’s today from 10am to 10pm and tomorrow from 10am to 10pm.

The Salvation Army annually helps more than 23 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction and economic hardships through a range of social services. By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army is doing the most good at 7,600 centers of operation around the country. In the first-ever listing of “America’s Favorite Charities” by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Salvation Army ranked as the country’s largest privately funded, direct-service nonprofit. The 200th anniversary celebration of the Erie Canal took place this year at Bellamy Harbor Park. Funding and/or support came primarily from the New York State Canal Corp, the New York State Council on the Arts, the City of Rome, the County of Oneida, Mohawk Valley EDGE, the Rome Community Foundation, the Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, and the Rome Industrial Development Corporation. The first shovelful of dirt was turned in Rome on July 4, 1817 for con-struction of the Erie Canal, and the Chamber extends its thanks to all who made possible the July 22nd “First Dig” reenactment/celebration, supported by Rome Historical Society and Rome Main Street Alliance, and the October 7th Erie Canal Water Tower Lighting. The Chamber was the grant applicant and National Electric Systems Inc of Rome was the tower contractor.
